I would like to get a brother or sister for Casey. Casey is a 2 year old male. Is it best to get a male or female? Should Casey do the choosing? Any information is appreciated. I have been told by many, family and neighbors, that Casey is a special dog. He is happy, fun, smart and does not randomly bark. He only barks when the kids are on the trampoline. I knew that this breed has a tendency to be yappy. I did discourage random barking except while play time. Any info would be appreciated. Male or female?

personally, i think either sex would work, i have had all girls, also have had 2 males in the group. and no problems
if getting a adult, take him with and watch his reaction, let him help decide.
and give him alot of attention when you doo get the new sheltie, so he does not get jealous

It really depends on the indivdual dog.
My oldest Male sheltie Justice when he was younger didn't always care for other males. So I got a female Ember. Then I got another female Diva because Ember was more tolerate then Justice of the same sex. My last pup I got a male because the 2 girls are quite the force and 1 more girl would have thrown us into chaos. Justice is almost 10 and he has mellowed alot in regards to other males.
I however, kept in mind that a really pushy dramatic male would not work. I really liked one of Birch's littermates named Hickory but he liked to throw his weight around alot and I thought if I took him he would be a grease spot in 2 seconds when he met Justice. Birch had the same drive but he didn't have the edge. It worked out well for me.
I picked the dogs that would work for me first and then considered how they would fit into my pack second. Because if I didn't like them I didn't want to live with them no matter how well they got along with the other dogs. There are certin personalities I do not get on with(ie submissive, shy).
