New baby question

Hi everyone! My married daughter and I have Sheltie sisters who are just over a year old. She's now expecting, and due the end of May. Any hints on how to help the girls adjust to the upcoming baby?
 
they have dolls now that sound/smell just like a regular baby, I would get one and practice with the fur babies,
 
I have read, when the baby is born bring something home with the babies scent on it prior to bring the baby home. This wasy your dogs get used to the scent. I am not sure if it works but Victoria Stillwell has suggested this on her show to couples.
 
My daughter just had a baby in July. We had absolutely no problems with any of the dogs adjusting to the baby. They were all very curious and had to be told leave it quite a bit. But, in all very smooth transition. We let them sniff the baby and didn't get upset if they got a little close. Just reminded them to "leave it". Pyper loves to bat at the baby swing and make it move. I think my granddaughter and all the dogs will be great friends!!
 
My niece had a baby in October. When she is over, the dogs will stand up at her and sniff the baby, and then go on their way. We have never had any problem with any of the dogs with the babies and there have been 11 of them all together. Just watch carefully and remove the dog if it seems to be agitated at all. Bringing home something that smells of the baby is a great idea.
 
Thanks for all the responses! My daughter has some friends with little kids who have visited both her house and our house, and the dogs have done OK with them -- but I wasn't sure what the reaction might be to a brand-new baby.

I really like the idea of bringing something with the baby's scent home. I'll have to make sure she does that.
 
Take a blanket from the hospital the baby laid on and have her take it home.
Let the sheltie sniff around on the blanket to let your pupper know a family member is coming.

I did this with Lil' Lady too but reverse. When I picked her up I had a blanket Lucky laid on so she knew there was a pal waiting for her.

It really does help.

Our family grew by one earlier this year. We had similar concerns about introducing our new baby to our two dogs (Golden Retriever and Sheltie). We did what Sable suggested... I came home a day before my wife and son came home, to tend to the dogs, and brought home a blanket our son was swaddled in for the dogs to smell, and get used to his scent...

Both were very curious, and gentle, however, we always limited contact to supervised visits. Our son is now 11months old... our boys have gotten used to having him around, and are quite patient with him (even though he is now in the grabby phase)...
