Hi everyone, my name is MaryBeth, Im 22 and live near St. Louis with my husband and daughter.
I am a HUGE animal lover. Ive been breeding rats for the last 6 years and also have been taking in unwanted dogs and find them a new home.
My newest dog is a sheltie :)
His name is Blue and he is about 5 years old. He has 1 blue eye and 1 brown eye. He has spent his whole life on a chain and I dont think he has ever been grooomed. He is super matted. Ive spent an hour grooming his chest but havent even made a dent in his back yet. Ive had to cut some of the fur on his back down to almost his skin.

Welcome! How great to take in unwanted dogs, do you find it hard to part with them? How sad someone goes to the effort of getting a sheltie then treats it so poorly. Shelties are so affectionate and family orientated it just cruel keeping it tied up away from family. He looks really happy though despite everything.

Blue is a lucky boy now that he has ended up with you. He is very handsome.
 
Welcome to the forum! I am glad Blue found you! He must be a very good boy to let you groom him for an hour! Five minutes is my dogs limit! Congrst on the new family member!

Blue is a lucky puppy!

It probably feels pretty good for him to get those mats out. What kind of brush/comb/etc. are you working with? You might need to get some spray-on detangler at your local pet store. It might help. Then again, with the most stubborn mats, it might be simpler just to cut them out.

My girl Bela is about 5 years old, and came from Sheltie rescue. At some point before she entered rescue, some well-meaning soul shave her down completely. Please don't do this if you don't have to - it takes FOREVER for it to grow back - Bela is going on 10 months now and is still pretty odd-looking.

I hope you and Blue have lots of happiness together!

Welcome to the forum and what wonderful soul you are and Blue is one lucky sheltie!! He will feel so good once you get him all groomed.

Blue is such a sweetie. He is very shy though and often acts like he is about to get hit.
I do find it hard to rehome the dogs, but I know once they go to a new home then I have room for one more to help.
I have spray-on detangler (makes it so much easier) and have several grooming brushes: Pin Brush, comb & slicker brush. But Im not really sure which to be using.
He doesnt really like the brushing, but he lets me do it. Im trying to cut out oly the really bad matts.

Welcome to the forums, and thank you for saving Blue and other dogs. He will surely bring joy and laughter to your lives, and also a unique connection with your little girl. On every phone call when our son was at college, his first words were, "How is Montey? I miss him".:smile2:
