New Puppy Issues

We brought home our new puppy yesterday. We have a 3 year old Sheltie who isn't very fond of him. He aggressive and snaps. We keep them separated now. This morning when I picked up new puppy's poop I discovered he has worms. We've never had this issue before. So he will be taken to vet tomorrow. Question. How to prevent older Sheltie from getting them. And is this hard to treat?

Do not worry !!
Puppies are born with worm larvae. To be provided wormed first 5-6 weeks of age, and this has to be repeated at 9-11 weeks of age.
Here, after developing the dog natural immunity against roundworms and there is usually only cure for worms when it is discovered that the dog has worms.
It is most common single that puppies have worms, it relates to the adult dog has developed the aforementioned immunity against roundworms.

I have not ever had this issue. However, I do know that it is an easy fix. The vet will know what to do. They just give a deworming liquid via syringe in the mouth and the medicine should kill the worms. As far as your other dog, as long as they do not eat the poop I don't see how this would affect him.

Also Hanne is right. Puppies are born with worms so try to stay calm and not panic. Even though I did not see any worms with Cleo's poop, the vet still gave her deworming medicine as a puppy. It is something I almost forgot about until this post.

Get an all-wormer from your adult dog, you can buy this from your vet or a pet store. It's easy to give (usually it's a palatable chew). I'd give 2 courses for your adult dog, one now and one in three months, to be safe. I worm my dogs regularly.

As others stated, this isn't unusual in a young puppy. You are doing the right thing by going to the vet.

If your older dog is on regular heartworm medication they may be OK. Talk to your vet about it when you take the pup in. The vet will be able to tell you if the heartworm medication your three year old is on will protect them or if you need a wormer for them.

Thanks everyone..... Puppy tested positive for roundworm hookworm tapeworm and 2 other things I can't remember off the top of my head. Vet gave me 2 deworming meds and we are cleaning up the poo spots immediately and spraying spot with vinegar. Older boy is on trifexis so vet said he should be fine as long as we keep him away from the poo. I was just a little shocked because this is our 4 th Sheltie and it's never happened. I think when you see that worm wiggle for the first time you just really get grossed out.

Well it is good that your puppy has been checked out. Now the problem will be taken care of and you can relax now that you have a plan in progress. Let us know how the little one is doing once this ordeal is all over.
