Hi everyone,
I just got a 5 month old sheltie (blacky) yesterday from a breeder.
I am having issues walking the dog on the leash.
Black does not want to walk on a leash, atleast not without a treat.
The breeder i have a feeling got the pup trained to only walk with a treats.
Plus she used a simple leash that would tighten as the puppulled forward(slip knot).
I bought a nice collar and leash, but am having a hard time getting him to walk.
Any adivce???
Thanks sheltie nation!!!

Puppies take some time to learn to walk on a leash. It's an unnatural feeling for them to feel opposition when they are walking.

I'd start by putting the collar and leash on in the house and just letting him drag it around to get used to just a little bit of resistance. Do this for a week for a little bit at a time. If you have a fenced in yard, you can even do it outside. Let him drag the leash around and do what he wants.

Slowly start to pick up the leash but follow him around. Let him decide where to explore/go (within reason of course!) Slowly start to ask him to walk with you. Make it really fun like cheering him on and praising him when he does walk with you. You may have to take it really slowly. Maybe the first few weeks you only make it to the end of your driveway, or sidewalk. Take it slowly and allow him to be successful.
