New Sheltie Mom

I have recently acquired a Sheltie from my neighbor who was not taking care of him. His name is Thurstin. He's (estimated) 4-5 months old and a handful. We currently have two other dogs. Ringo ( Jack Russell Terrier/Rat Terrier Mix) and Bonnie (Pembroke Corgi). The problem we currently have is Bonnie is the Alpha and doesn't like the puppy. We've inquired with a trainer but she's not been able to get back to me about dates.

Any tips to incorporate the puppy with my 4 and 7 year old adult dogs? Also, any tips for making Thurstin stop continually yapping at the Corgi when she's just doing nothing?

Generally let the dogs work it out amongst themselves, unless you thing blood is going to be drawn.

As for the sheltie barking. . . welcome to the world of shelties ;)

How long have you had Thurstin? It may just be that they are all trying to determine how things will shake out with the new addition. Also, Thurstin may not have had the socialization, and your dogs may be teaching him correct/appropriate behavior. But, it's really hard to say.

I got a puppy in January and my older dogs did not appreciate it at all. all the puppy wanted to do was play, play and play. they did not have that kind of energy but did adjust over the months. My 9 yr old female sheltie will still not play with the pup at all.
we'd love to see pix of all three :yes:

Welcome to the world of shelties!! And welcome to the forums.I have a mutiple dog home,2 shelties,one lab...

This is my advice...let them work it out.It usually does,unless your alpha is going to be nasty about things.They will let the new pup know,where they stand in the pecking order.

And I guarantee you,if the new pup is as smart as all shelties...it will learn quickly. Its quite a young pup,not like its an older dog,that may have been alpha in another home.

As far as the barking,try redirecting the sheltie pup,this could be a great time for a training thing.Teaching him to hush,possibly try using a clicker,and carry that thing with you all the time.

When the new pup is doing a good thing(like being quiet),try clicking and giving a treat of some kind.The idea is to enforce the positive with a clicker.

Welcome aboard! Be sure to post your questions under the different forums such as behavior and puppy. We have some great folks that tend to read only some sections.

The advice given already is great though! I have two furkids but got them both together so they worked it out at the same time. Don't forget to toss us poor pic deprived people some pictures including your whole pup family!! :)

Barking is very common for Shelties. I agree with everyone else, let the dogs work it out themselves. A lot of times the older dogs will discipline a puppy, just as an adult would discipline a child. Shelties are smart dogs, and your puppy will figure it out.
 
I suspect they'll work it out in time. My old girl was 10+ when my puppy arrived. She puts him in his place on a regular basis when she has had enough of him... Yet (at 13) she still surprises me when she occasionally initiates play.
