hiya, just stopping by to say hi and that i just adopted a sheltie. bad news he was very very sick, good news is he is doing well now. got him from petland, they are taking care of his vet bills.

his name is jake and he is sable and he has some merle traits, the graying of the fur like stripes here and there. he is darling a little scared of stuff. but only had him a week. i have been sorta crate training him, i have a long tall laundry storage container, i made a bed in there for him, so he isnt locked in anywhere. it has been working well. he has had a few accidents, so i have determined that he can have some time out, but i have to watch him every second. when i leave him in there and take him outside after awhile he goes outside and i compliment him and stuff.

this is harder then i thought wow! i love him, he is precious, and thank god getting over a bacterial or viral infection, he has been on 4 different meds. so its been tough putting him outside for potty in the yucky cold. poor boy. getting him to walk on a leash is tough too. since he is feeling much better i have taken him bye bye on short trips, like to dunkin donuts which is about 7 mins from my house. it really was nice to see up cheered up and running around the house after being so sick.

ok im rambling 3 hours of sleep doesnt help so i just figured i would say hi and this is what im doing now. and see how everyone is training their puppies and such.

Welcome!

Sorry to hear Jake has been sick. Glad he's getting better. I'm sure you will enjoy it here. The people are very helpful, caring and fun. Welcome to the world of being owned by a Sheltie!

Welcome!

How old is your new pup? Where did you get him from? Was he sick when you brought him home or did that come after?

It helps to have abit of background before we ALL start feeding you with our sage (and sometimes contradictory) advice! :wink2:

Good luck and welcome to the forum. Despite my sarcastic comment, you really will find some great feedback and information here. I'm so glad you joined!

Welcome to the group! I'm sorry to hear about your little pup too! There are a lot of great people on here with great advice so ask away on the questions. Have fun with your new little guy!!

Welcome to the forum and Congrats on your new baby!! It is good to hear Jake is starting to feel better. What was wrong with him?

Welcome to the forum to you and Jake; sorry to hear that he was ill but its great that he is now feeling better.

Pretty much the idea on potty training: when they first get up, take them outside. If they've been playing hard, take them outside. If you just fed them, take them outside. If they drop their head and start walking in a circle (known here as "the potty dance") take them outside. And, take them out often enough based on age (1 hour intervals per month of life, so an 8 week old puppy can't be expected to "hold it" longer than 2 hours).

Also, if possible the puppy should walk out on their own legs using the same door each time (we have 7 doors to the outside at this house! Only one is the "out to potty" door). As you go to the door, say your cue to go outdoors (I say "OUTside! do you want to go OUTside!") Go out with them and chant your cue to potty (whatever you want to say "go potty" is my choice) and if they go potty praise them profusely. If they make a mistake and potty indoors, roll up a newspaper and swat YOURSELF in the head with it (just joking...sort of). No, just clean up the mess and go on with trying to get your timing down so that you recognize when the dog needs to go and get them out there in time. Shelties are brilliant dogs and very eager to please....once they figure out what you want them to do.

Hello and welcome! I am sorry to hear that he is sick. I hope that he will get over whatever is bothering him soon. Shelties are wonderful dogs, very intelligent and sensitive and in tune with their owners. You will love being owned by one :wink2:.

Congratulations!!

...but...OH NO PETLAND?!?!?

Please please please tell me not Rocklin, CA. :confused2:

edit: Must not be Rocklin...I missed the Dunkin Donuts part.
