New to Forum, not shelties

Hi and welcome. It's quite a new experience having a puppy, esp if they are high energy. I was lucky when I got Mr D after not having a pup in well over a decade, he was a laid back easy going pup, then I got Tully and boy, I was not ready for a high energy sheepdog pup. And that's how I ended up here too! Nowadays Deska is a ratbag and Tully is the sweetest natured lady. So go figure - maybe it was the extra energy I put into Tully.

If you haven't done the puppy thing in quite awhile, it is daunting. Lots of good insight & info on here. And you DO survive that time, although there are days you question whether you can.
Kaleigh was hardest in the afternoons, she got whiny and moody and nothing really did much to help, like a colicky kid...she was also rather bite-y..I was constantly replacing toys and chewies for my fingers-she isn't really much of a chewer at all now. And it took her a bit to make it through the night on potty time. She was pretty much every 4 hrs. So sleep was interrupted for mths...But she made it through and became wonderful...u-n-t-i-l we brought home Savannah, then she regressed...ugh. And Savannah-well-no words adequately describe her, you have to experience the clever holy terror. She slept through the night from day one, but refused to potty train, it finally clicked at probably 7 mths where she could be trusted, spite more than anything, ugh...Kaleigh took 2 wks. Kaleigh objected to the crate, Savannah LOVED the crate. It is like two opposites clashing in my home, ha. But together they are great-such good playmates.
But now Savannah is coming up on a yr...phew...and all that repetition and consistency I think has rooted. I thought she was retarded at first, as my other shelties were so EASY...she is challenging. But it is totally a "will" thing, is what the breeder and my Vet have said. My lil Diva that wants to be queen. And she is quite vocal when she doesn't get it, ha...
I hope the journey through puppyhood is rewarding...I know mine have made me laugh so much. And now they are getting to be more manageable. I found puppyhood overwhelming. And when days proved to be objectionable, I hung out on the forum for encouragement

Welcome to SN. Puppies sure keep life interesting! And just when you think they will never mature, suddenly the puppy phase is over...so enjoy it while it lasts.

We've been lucky with the house training, he's really been easy to work with. It's been a couple weeks since he relieved himself in the house, so we're thinking that means he's figured that out.
It helps that he's usually pretty good in the pen, unless he hears something that leads him to believe someone is getting treats and he isn't.
It's the biting the pant leg thing that's our biggest problem at the moment. He thinks that's loads of fun.

Wonderful to have you here! We use The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete as our guide. It's a fabulous book -- our puppies responded very well to their methods of kindness and consistency.
