We have a female 1year old sheltie sable in color and would like to get a male companion but with different coloring ....there is a male sable merle in the litter that I was initially drawn to but would or could this be a mistake and the dog end up with defects , washed out sable color ? We just want a unique coloring and different from our female we love so dearly. The mother is quite white looking and the dad is a pure sable.

Sable merle is completely normal and does not carry any "defects" per say as long as the parents are clear for genetic issues there should be no issue.

Like Linda said theres nothing wrong with sable merles. But I would be more concerned about the mother. You said she has a lot of white. Is she white factored, a double merle, or a harlequin? If she's a double merle I would be concerned if the breeders are reputable or not.
