NJ now requires pets to be restrained while car is in motion

Under a new state law, New Jersey drivers who fail to properly restrain their pets in the car could face criminal charges and financial penalties. The goal of the new restraint requirement is to reduce the number of car accidents caused by drivers who are distracted by their pets, and to protect animals from harm in the event of a crash.

The law forbids dogs from hanging out windows – and also from riding in the bed of a pickup truck.

Drivers who fail to do so could face fines from $250 to $1,000 – for each offense. They could also be charged with disorderly conduct under New Jersey’s animal cruelty statutes.

Do you know what the actual law is? I would like to read the actual text but I can't find anything. I'm curious about the specifics. I think this is great, btw!
 
Thanks for the heads up on this. Edan and CJ are usually in harnesses when we travel because the hatch of the wagon is too full of other stuff for crates. Hopefully that will be adequate.
 
This is a good thing. I say that even though we haven't solved the problem of Tinsel - can't crate him or he would have to be dragged out and, bad me, I haven't tried a travel harness yet. We don't have a law here but if they did I would also want to see them consider crating a dog in the back of a pick up as a cruelty offense.
 
Restraining dogs in car

I still am not so sure about this law. I keep thinking of my precious little Angie Love who had a terrible time with arthritis in her back and back legs. She would ride in the passenger seat with me going everywhere and just lie there calmly the whole time. She had to find her right position to lie in to be comfortable. I can't imagine harnessing her and worse yet, if I put her in a crate then she would be in the back seat (because of the size of the crate) and then, what is the point of taking her with me? I wanted her to be beside me, enjoying our special time together. We had such wonderful little outings, mostly going to the store three blocks away or other short distances here in town. I still can see her looking at me so adoring during these times.

I just think anyone who has a sick or injured dog would not want to confine their dog this way. Whenever one of my babies was in real trouble and had to go to the vet, my husband would drive and I would hold my little one in my lap. There have to be exclusions for these little sweethearts.
