NO fence discussion

Rescues that require fences can not complain about how many dogs they have in rescue. I just had a puppy I sold killed, and it wasn't because her owners lacked a fence.

I do not agree that no fence = irresponsible dog owner. Many, many responsible, loving dog owners live where there is no fence, for one reason or another. I actually think the fence requirement at rescues is prejudiced against hundreds of potentially GREAT homes for their rescues.

Do I have a fence, yes. Would I allow my dogs to run around unleashed if I did not, NO! Responsible even without a fence!

EXACTLY!!!!

I've also seen where rescues go even a step further... thier requirements say...

"Adopters are homeowners with a fenced yard".

So you don't just need to have a fence... you need to own it too. I understand that it's to avoid renters getting dogs and then later giving them up because they can't find another place to rent that allows dogs. (it's a pretty common thing up here) ... BUT... there are plenty of responsible and dedicated dog owners who are renters. They would not surrender a dog simply because it made it easier to find a new place to rent!

My heart is in rescue be it sheltie or other. I think it is ridiculous demanding potential owners have to have a fenced yard. Many wonderful sheltie owners live in condos and apartments and exercise their dogs on leash. So many in rescue would be just fine with responsible people in apartments or even yards without fences. Where I live some areas cannot have fenced yards. I think they need to reconsider this must have fence requirement. A fence does not make a responsible owner.

When we were looking for dogs I had to go to a breeder as a student who rents an apartment. My crazy responsible breeder thouht that after she met me I was a suitable home for one of her babies. Since I couldn't go through a rescue I got my baby Luna. And she probably gets more attention from me because I can't just throw her in the backyard we go on walks and I take her to daycare amd the dog park so she can have her offleash time ... If I went to get a rescue today I would be turned away even though ihave a satisfied puppy and we do so many things together so she can be safe and excersed ... Silly

Thank you for posting to CISR page. I do too hope that CISR started this discussion for a reason and is willing to judge on case by case basis. In present economy times it is harsh to say to people- move to different townhouse or build a fence so you can adopt from us. I know few other sheltie rescues, WI, Iowa and MN are open for responsible owners with no fences, not for every dog but at least some. Just matter of common sense.
ClantyreSheltie, am so sorry to hear about puppy. What happened?

Honestly, I don't think they care. They didn't put that up there to have people try to convince them otherwise. Rescues with that hardline stance will continue to have it regardless.
