Does anyone know how Aussies do in agility? My friend may be getting a red Aussie and plans to train her (Muffin) in agility. I've heard they are good dogs.
P.S. Prayers and positive thoughts for the family of Muffin's owner. She was a victim to cancer yesterday.
There are a lot of Aussie's that compete here. They are FAST but you have to be able to control them. The mineature Aussie's are becoming more and more popular here as well and they are fast too - they will give the shelties here a run for their money that's for sure!
I agree--they can be great agility dogs. But they are a lot drivier and pushier than most shelties. If you can keep them in check, they are great. You will often see one barking their way around a course (albeit very quickly).
We just watched our friend's aussie for a week and she was very sweet, but also very pushy. You have to nip that in the bud right away.
We have a number of people in our club who run Aussies and they perform very well and learn pretty quickly. They can be stubborn and a bit headstrong, almost like a Border Collie in that regard, but if the person training can project strength (of personality) and confidence that they are in control of the situation they respond well.
We have a lot of Aussies competing here, but they dont tend to be the top runners - that's usually the kelpies followed by BC. The seem to be more flowing in their movements rather than darting around at speed. I do love Aussies though, the remind me of a bigger version of a sheltie.
Aussies wouldn't be my choice for agility. They can't compete with the fast Border Collies, so if being competitive is important to your friend, she may want to look at a different breed. In general, most of them aren't all that fast. They also tend to be a much more strong willed breed.
