Now Tully is chasing cars

Crap. So walking this morning Deska slipped his martingale and chased a van - lucky it wasn't going fast. Usually he would have on a harness but I let my guard down seeing as he was so sore last night.

Anyway, as I ran onto the road to grab Deska I dropped Tully's lead, so then she took off after a fast car coming up behind. Thank god the person heard me screaming at Tully and screeched to a stop. This is the second time in a fortnight Tully has taken off after a car. She has also made a few attempts on lead. I know she is copying Deska, maybe because he has been getting more attention. She also hates that the cat gets to walk off lead all the time.

I gave her a smack (only a light one because she cowers when I raise my voice so I feel rotten). Any ideas for nipping this in the bud before I have another chronic car chaser? Back on the gentle leader maybe
 
I thought the Martingale collars were the ones they can't slip out off. I like my harness that I have for Meggie. Think I'll get one for Cooper too.

Do you walk on a street that has many cars going by? The reason I ask is that I make Meggie sit when a car is coming down the road. We don't have a lot of cars though. She has never tried to chase a car, but since she was a pup I have put her in a sit when they approach.
 
The number of cars varies. He tends to only go into chase made if there are a few around. He used to always sit when we saw a car, but at about 2yrs old he started chasing. Tully has only just started doing it at 3yrs (but thats copying D)

Deska does this backing out spin thing to get out of his martingale, he doesnt do it by accident, he has worked out the exact angle to twist his head. Definately back to harnesses.

Ok, Ideas to curb (pun intended) Tully's chase drive. Can you leave Deska inside while you work with Tully? Don't even bother trying to train them both at the same time. You'll just get frustrated hehe..

Go sit on the corner with Tully. Take his(Tully is a he right?) favorite treats and car watch. When he doesn't react to a passing car, reward him. If he gets excited or reacts in any way to a vehicle make a high pitched 'ehht' sound. You can put him in a sit if you want as it gives him a job to focus on when he sees the car.

You can use this same technique with Deska too. Once Tully has had 15 min. swap them out and train Deska. In a couple weeks/months (sigh..) you'll be that cool chick that has the dogs that sit and ignore cars.
 
I agree with Wayne about working and walking them separately until you can resolve this problem.

He has suggested some good ideas too, I have nothing to add to that, other than I hope you can work this out.
 
I agree with Wayne also and unfortunately at 8 1/2 months, Megan is still trying to chase cars :uhoh:.I usually put her in a sit when we see a car coming then give verbal praise when she behaves. I guess I need to get the treats out again when she does do the right thing!

So bottom line Car, you're not alone here :cool:
