I am just SO excited, number one is I got a sheltie puppy for Chrissie-his name is Dexter, and he has an older brother called Henry (15 months old), I now feel my family is complete !

But that's not what this post is about, it's about obedience.....

When we got Henry I started obedience at what I now call and "old fashioned" obedience school--they used choker chains, and you MAKE the dog into the sit or down or whatever command you use. Ithen started doing agility (I'm a novice at all of this) and was introduced to clickers and postive reinforcement training.

With my new puppy I started last night at a "new" obedience school, which uses clickers and postive reinforcement. After one lesson, Dexter is sitting, standing and dropping. And he and I have a FABULOUS relationship.

I'm really quite distressed and upset with myself that I've scarred Henry with his initial training. But I have to tell myself I only did as I was instructed. You live and learn.

So I'm so excited this year to be working 2 dogs--I've got to spread myself around 2 clubs to get both dogs working. lucky I have a supportive hubbie and son !!!!

All that maters is you have found what works for you and your dogs now. Try not to beat yourself up about the past, it's pointless, and you waste precious time now and in the furture.

I am sure both of your babies will be more than happy to do whatever you ask of them, most days, before long.

I'm sure your older one will love the new style as much as your pup!

I'm dorry you had a bad experience with Henry. He will forgive you and if you go on with further training with the new style will have as much fun. I too started with the jerk and pull method many years ago. No fun.:(

I do not use clickers(have dabbled in them) but a positive motivational method. Luring,shaping behavior. I do use corrections but the are usually verbal uh-uh or gentle physical guidance but only after the exercises are well known. Never in learning stages.

I agree with the others. Henry will be fine and will thrive with the new method. I use postive methods too and love the results with my two.
