OFA 'Good' ?

I got some more info on the pup I mentioned earlier who is being sold by a local breeder.

Her parents OFA'd "good". Is this acceptable, or should I look for a dog where at least one of the parents OFA'd "excellent" ?

She is 15 1/2 inches at 10 months. The breeder said she doesn't have the head they are looking to breed.

Thoughts?
 
OFA good is fine. Most shelties are good or excellent. I myself would be cautious of a fair. Keep in mind this is the grade of the parent not the pup. Hopefully a good or excellent parent will have good or excellent pup but no guarntee. But at least they are trying better then not testing at all.:smile2:
 
Have you seen the puppy? At 10 months you should be able to make some basic judgments on structure. Does she walk properly etc.. I'd say that as long as she is healthy and shows good structure at this age, you will probably be fine.

There are no guaranties in life but you are picking a breed that excels in agility and it sounds like this puppy would be fine.
 
good parents may still poduce pups which are anatomically imbalanced. Probem with hip displasia is that genetic part is the only one reason of many why dog might develop hip problems, much depends on general structure soundness, muscle and joint development, growth rate and nutrition, amount and quality of acitivites that dog has when growing so there is a lot of unknown no matter what parental testing shows...
at 10 months you might have too much hair to see clearly structure but consider this- most of sound puppies will have easy natural trot when running with long strides, no hocking out, cow hocks, crooked legs, out of the elbows
etc..
I think even if unfamiliar with anatomy and structure, if you let yourself to observe well you will have this gut feeling of " wow, what an elegant run"
