OH NO… My girls are FAT!

Still not the fattest, so don't worry! My Molly should be around 22#, and she's ranging from 39 to 41. Last weigh in was 41. That's all because I live with my mother, who free-ranges hers, and won't separate them. Luckily, we'll be moving out soon, where Molly will have no choice but to eat just what I give her!

:eek2: OMG thats one round sheltie!!!!!!! I think shelties are naturally missing that im full sensor to stop eating! I think every sheltie out there would be a ball of rolling fluff if left to their own devices!!!!!!

Mike,

You know I am a firm believer in the green bean diet....and Daisy loves them. I only feed her a 1/4 cup grain-free kibble and a handful of frozen green beans per meal. She does get treats, but I use poached, boneless, skinless chicken breast pieces...not very big. An average breast lasts about 5 days. I am baking some of the sweet potato chews right now...Daisy is crazy for them. I think by staying away from commercial treats I am also reducing calories.

Good luck with the diets! I know your dogs are active - in your rescue video they were frolicking around with each other big time!

Thanks Beth, I think the green bean diet will work great to shed a few pounds. I’m doing the sweet potato chews this weekend, and I’m sure Belle and Kristy will just love them for treats.

omg you're so right, and as we said why DO shelties love to eat so much?? They never warned us about that little known trait, lol

I was just thinking about free feeding dogs tonight and was thinking I would never be able to do that with Ember, Diva or Birch. Justice maybe could handle it as he is a gentleman and has a bird like metabolism. I fed them this evening and Diva choked on a piece of kibble because she was inhaling it so fast. I thought I was going to need to do the hemlich. :eek2: Diva is up to 2.5 cups of food a day now. Active and wired that one is.

Justicemom - Me neither, my sheltie's bellies would be hitting the floor when they all walked!

Malmont - I was feeding Orijen to my shelties too and two of them are close in size to your to. When I first put them on it I had already been struggling to get their weights down. When I finally did get them to acceptable weights my two larger shelties were only getting 2/3 Cup of food a day (1/3 Cup Twice Daily). During the more active months when the weather is nice I up it to 1 cup day. I think your two may be a bit bigger in size than mine so they may need a bit more, but this should give you an approx. base point to start at.

I don't give much consideration to what it says on the bag, its always way too much. I seem to usually end up halving the recommended amount.

Yes, I do believe what the bag specifies is toooo much. A cup and a quarter doesn’t look like much but when we get back down to a normal weigh, I think 2/3s is the way to go. My pasted two shelties never had a problem and I would free feed, and they only eat their small portion and never gained weight. Belle and Kristy on the other hand would eat until they popped. All I have to say is “Hungry Hunry Kristy” add they come running like I’m handing out 100$ bills. heehee.
My girls are about 15 – 16 inches tall and I think a good weight would be 29-30 lbs for this taller size. They were too thin at 22 lbs when I first got them.

My three too. They're absolutely crazy about Orijen and Acana, I can actually give them kibbles as treats, they like it so much.

My boy is 17 3/4" to 18" (official AKC measurements) and he weighs 28-30 lbs.
My 15 3/8" to 15 3/4" girl (official AKC measurements) weighs 19-21 lbs.

This is Chloe (15.5" roughly) and she currently weight 19.5, but probably has the same ranges as your pup. But Chloe is super active and does agility. Since she has battled Lymes disease for two years, I like to keep her on the lighter side as this is better for her joints down the line.
