Hi
I've been noticing that my 8yr old sheltie (Bailey) likes to be by himself. Nowadays I will be in one room with my 9 month old (Dexter) and Bailey is away - usually in the basement. Even when I call him, he just wants to stay down there by himself.

If this is new behavior, it may be he is not feeling well. Especially if you call, and he still wants to be alone. Sometimes when dogs are in pain they will go off by themselves. I think older dogs do this, so as not to get bumped or bothered by a young one. I would suggest a visit to vet for a checkup.

Does he stay away if Dexter isn't with you? I would say he just wants a break from an adolescent, can't blame him really.

I'd be concerned about arthritis pain and stiffness.

Also, if he has developed thyroid issues they act detached and have no energy either.

Yep, I agree, a vet visit.

Eight years old isn't that old for a Sheltie. They still should have a fair amount of energy. If this is a change in behavior, I would get in a vet visit. When was the last time you had a CBC run on him?

I'm actually past due for a vet visit - just got a reminder today in the mail about his physical, DHLPP and heartworm so I'll be bringing him in this upcoming week

Is he eating???? Could just be he wants a break.....puppies can be EXTREMELY annoying to older dogs. I would have him checked by a vet to be sure there are no health issues....
