Omega 3 Supplements

Hey all,

I'm new here and my search didn't really yield the information I want. I have a 9 month old and I want to get him on a good omega 3 supplement. I kind of want to stay away from salmon based oils and I've been reading about phytoplankton, but as you probably all know, everything I've searched for has come up with completely different opinions. "Why you should only use krill oil" "Why krill oil will kill your dog in seconds and destroy half the plant" type stuff. Just wondering what you all use and who has had positive results. I'm in Canada, so locally available is preferred.

Thanks, Anthony

Hi Anthony and welcome to the Forums! For what it's worth, I use krill oil for all my dogs and have had good results. I get mine from Mercola...it's' expensive initially but it comes in a nice, airtight bottle that doesn't need to be refrigerated and one to two pumps a day depending on your dog's weight in the food does the job. You might consider subscribing to Dr. Karen Becker's holistic daily newsletter from Mercola...I've learned a great deal from reading it, and her products are excellent. Best of all, it's free! Find it here. You can also buy the krill oil for pets from this site.

Another source of Omega 3's is pure coconut oil, if you'd prefer to avoid fish. Just be sure to buy a good quality brand. I believe you use 1 teaspoon per pound. I used it for a while but found my dogs did better on krill oil.

Just ordered Mercola krill oil...
Do you think it will help Baron as his coat seems dull?

It should make a real difference in his coat, Gloria. Depending on his weight, you only need one or two pumps a day in his food (and they love the taste). Let us know if it helps! (y)

I just add sardines and oysters (as well of the liquid from the can) and occasionally raw(previously frozen) salmon to their food. Their coats just glisten

I feed Zulu sardines too. Packed in water, no added salt. They smell awful to me, but he goes nuts when I open the can. Super shiny coat!
