Onerous grooming with sheltie?

I've been scanning the many posts about how long it takes to groom a sheltie, the tools required, "poop chutes" (how DO you put up with that,lol), and am wondering if grooming a sheltie is as onerous a task as it sounds. How often do you have to spend that 40-45 min. on your dog? Does it depend on the season? is a female easier to groom than a male? does it depend if the dog comes from a show line with heavy coats? I had a golden retriever many years ago, is the grooming required comparable to that? (once a week he got his daily brushing, nails, paws, and sanitary trim when required). Sorry for the noob questions - all the grooming posts have me wondering.

When Vash is shedding I usually comb him once a day. Other than the brushing is a weekly ritual. I also trim the hair between his paw pads and his nails once a week as well (assuming they need it)

I tend to give Vash a bath every month unless he gets super messy somehow. And durring that bath we trim the hair below his "Spigot" to avoid nastyness.

As for the poop chute, on a regular basis I haven't noticed much of a need for it. However on the rare occasion Vash has a belly ache or is under the weather I've thanked my groomer for doing it. It is by far better to have it done than to be going *sniff sniff* "What in the world is that smell?" and realize it's coming from your shelties exhaust system.:lol:
 
It depends on the dog, but you'd be surprised that its less than you think, unless you are in show, or particularly anal (no pun intended!) about it.

It also depends on how much you do yourself vs. groomers.

I normally don't bath the dogs myself. 3 or 4 times per year, I bring them to a groomer for the full meal deal. Bath, poop chute, nails, trim ears and toes (I don't let them trim anything else beyond a minor "evening" of the coat.

In between, I try to schedule one every two-three weeks for each dog (alternating weeks). I focus on nails, feet trim, ear trim, and a good brush out. If I do everything, then yes, its about 45 minutes. When I brush, I use a dry shampoo and leave in conditioner. (CC Show Off and Ice on Ice)

If I'm cutting corners, I'll just do the feet andnails and a quick line brush - maybe about 20 minutes.

I'm fortunate that neither of my dogs are shedders though. Their coat seems to stick. But when I do brush, I could stuff a mattress or two!

Once I get going, I generally find it relaxing and really enjoy it. Usually its just a question of getting myself motivated to haul out the gear and get going.
 
my Belle doesn't have the heaviest coat yet, so grooming her 2 or 3 times a week is enough.. once a week I trim her nails and the hair on the bottom of her paws. she lies down and pretty much goes to sleep so it is a simple task. I use a spray bottle of water and her coat brushes out easily. I haven't had to do anything with her "behind" yet..

I do think that a female would be a lot less work than a male that has a much heavier coat and different body parts.
 
I dont groom mine an awful lot in winter. Probably once a week and a quick brush if they are looking a bit untidy in between. My male has a very thick coat while my female's coat is very light - so she need less grooming although she loves to be groomed so I will often just brush her when she is sitting next to me. I do behind their ears every couple of days though.

Now in summer its a different story. Because mine do dog sports and summer here is really hot I spend a lot of time getting their undercoat out once the start their warm weather shed. In those cases it takes me hours. I will spend about 2 hours furminating one side one day and then 2hours on the other side the next day. I do a furminating brush on both dogs each week then. Atm it is realy hot and we have comps this week so I take the furminator with me when we go to a park and will also spend a bit of time brushing some of it out so it floats away on the wind. If they didnt do the sports I wouldnt worry so much about getting the undercoat out quickly. I also wash them weekly when its hot to get the undercoat out as well.
 
Grooming a sheltie is not as tedious as one would think.

When Bailey is shedding her coat, I'll brush her every day for about 20-30 mins. Otherwise she gets a 15 minute brushing once a week.

I groom her (trim feet, ears, poop chute and cut nails) every 2-3 weeks. This only takes me about 45 minutes.

She only gets about 4-6 bathes a year.

I am pretty much with Barb on this one.I do line brush these guys once a week,check feet,and check poop shutes daily,especially with Trapp. Grooming here is very relaxing for me,and for them.
They have never been to a groomer.But before we go to NY in June,I am going to treat them both to one.
Trapp at the moment has a bigger coat than Jasper,so it takes a bit longer,but he is one that will lay forever and want to be brushed.

Mia is another whole ball game.Since she is blind & deaf,grooming with her takes place in piece work.And usually while she is next to me on sofa,while she is calm & relaxed. But things have improved 100% since she came home.Before I could not even begin to touch her with a brush,without her climbing the walls.
 
I don't spend a lot of time grooming. Feet and nails get checked weekly and clicked/trimmed as needed. Brushing - I do a quick brush through weekly. If they are shedding it takes longer and I will do it daily or every other day. Liam fights me with the feet. I think he is a typically boy - no Mom, I won't. He loves being brushed though. Emma tolerates it. Baths are every couple of months, unless it is needed.
 
I have four Shelties, and I manage pretty well. I brush out about once a week -- takes about an hour for all four, maybe a bit longer when I'm trimming Grinch feet and clipping nails. I bathe mine as needed; Layla gets the most because she's a therapy dog.

I find it very relaxing. :yes:

My schedule looks a lot like Randi's. As long as you stay on top of it, it really doesn't take too long.
