Oversized puppy

Hi, my Beau was 15.25" and 20 lbs. at 18 weeks. He is now about 19.5" and 40-42 lbs, he varies a bit--trying to keep him leaner. He is pure muscle and large boned. His mother and father were both champions (his mother was at Westminster even). I know this breeder, and I think most sheltie breeders, litters varied in size.

there can definitely be variations in size in a litter- Cranberry and Dixie are littermates- he's over and she's in size......

My dog is 20 weeks old and 13.5 inches tall. She's on the borderline between in size and over size and is out of the safe zone based on the Nobel growth chart. Her brother is definitely in size. When I went to the breeder's home to choose the puppy, I didn't know much about the size thing. I actually wanted a smaller puppy for portability reason. However, I chose her over her brother because she's more affectionate and outgoing compared to her brother. Also, I was the only female at home, so it's good to have an accompany to balance out the Yin and Yang.

If Beau ever gets a sibling, I will be looking for a smaller sheltie. I love my Beau to the moon and back, but he is HEAVY and big to pick up.

I also prefer them on the smaller size. Piper was only between 9-9 1/2" at 10 weeks and now is only 13 3/4 in height and is just the perfect height and length (he's bot as long as Finnie) and just so easy to pick up! Finnie is roughly 16" and very lean and long...it's very hard to pick him up and have him in a comfortable position lol.

All Shelties look on the small side to me. After spending 15 years with standard poodles, Shelties are a dream to pick up or groom. Willow sure looks like she'll be well oversized, her personality already is. :biggrin2:

:yuckyuck I have always preferred the oversized ones - more to love! Our biggest girl was Asta at 18 inches and about 30 pounds. I called her my plus-size girl. Getting Ally, her aunt, who was 14.5 inches and 17 pounds was a real shock! She packed a lot of personality into that little body though. Her nick name (among many) was Pipsqueak. :smile2:

My Littleman weighs 36 pounds, he is AKC registered as were both his parents who I met. His mother won several titles. He was only 3# 9oz when I got him. He is not overweight, perfect for his height, etc. I also had a Rescue girl named Sissy she was the exact same weight but a bit longer in torso. I will say the size is not an issue in my opinion. Naturally these dogs are not going to meet criterion for show. Who cares! lol They are loving, wonderful, local furkids. I would not change a hair on them. Sissy passed Sept 24 2017, she was 15 yy. She had a lovely life, was a sweet darling girl. Littleman is 100% Sheltie, I adore him with my entire heart. There is no greater love. ❤ Enjoy your baby and all the love you are blessed with.

Hi! This is my first post. And my first dog! Izzy is now 20 weeks old. Her height is 15.7” and her weight is 19.4 lbs/8.8 kg. She’s almost out of the sheltie growth chart already!

Anyone else have/had an oversized pup? Just looking for some reassurance here :D How big did your oversized pup grow to be?

Unfortunately I don’t know what to expect for Izzy’s fully-grown size as I was not allowed to meet or even see photos of her parents :(
