Good news! Glad he's feeling better. Mine have a tendency to wolf rawhide down too if they think someone else might get their paws on it. I hate it when that happens, I always worry about them swallowing big pieces.

Do dogs never learn to stop stealing each other's food? Is that something I shouldn't even bother to aim for (with training) because it's just not going to happen??

We have gotten to the point where they won't steal each others' food when I'm around. As soon as I leave, they get sneaky about it! So I think I've met my goal, and am not going to worry about it beyond that. I think if you have a food hound (which I have two of!) then it's a very difficult thing to do (to train them to not eat each others' food when you aren't there).

I caught Juliet sitting and STARING at Romeo while he ate his food once (didn't last long tho) so maybe she's learning. BUT ROMEO ISN'T HELPING! He's learnt to steal her food and run from her. She'll chase him for ages!! Sigh.

It can be taught,as the three here will not steal each others food.Jasper is just like Trapp was,a real foodie.All 3 of these dogs eat here in kitchen/dining area.
Jasper is the first one done,then Earnhardt.When they are done,they have to walk right by Trapp while he is eating.I know as much as Jasper would like to sneak in and grab a mouthful,he walks on by and never ventures.
It is funny to watch him,as one day as he was walking past,he kept turning his head,and walked into the kitchen cabinet,but he kept right on walking to go outside.
Trapp has become the slowest dog to eat.He finishes everything in his dish,but is slow about it.There was a time he would gulp so fast that he would toss his food undigested.

Romeo is smart.. and Juliet still a puppy.. i believe they will learn if you train them not to steal each other's food!
I've trained Fugon(Sheltie) to allow Koby(mini-pom) to eat his food but not vice versa. Fugon was trained this way since 2mths plus..as i know he gonna outgrow Koby alot!
Till now, he never snatched at Koby's food before. And when Koby tries to approach Fugon's food, i shooed him away by saying "NO" in a stern but non-threatening tone. Even i didn't stop him, Fugon would still allows Koby to eat his food right at his face. He just stares with a silent innocent plea look!
:-( I've accidentally trained Fugon to respect this little fella more.
(Imagine koby weighs only 3.5kg while Fugon weighs at 18kg.. Sometimes i really laugh at their ratio; if only Fugon's gut is half as brave as the little princey Koby...
