Pacing

Does anyone else's dog pace? Constantly?

I've taken my pup on long walks, all day play sessions at day camp, mental games...everything I can think of. He still paces. It's almost as if it's an OCD thing. Sometimes it's just laps around the coffee table or around the couch or to the kitchen and back to his pillow. I try to ignore it, but after a while it completely unnerves me and then I get anxious...

Our Barkley paces too, but not constantly. He is very active and needs stimulation or he gets bored, we've found. If he hasn't had enough exercise at the end of the day, he'll pace laps around the coffee table. He also paces when he needs to go out--he's not one who barks at the door, he paces instead. It sounds as if your pup is getting enough exercise though. Perhaps a good rawhide bone for him to chew when he gets antsy might help?

Sadie paces and it drives me crazy some times. In Sadie's case, she's either bored or obsessing about going outside.

She loves the nice weather or the snow and wants to be outside in it. No matter how bad it is out in the winter, she still obsesses. She'll pace around and whine to get outside. But once she's out there she wants back in because she doesn't want to be out by herself. It also doesn't matter if she's just come in from a really good walk or run and is tired out, she'll still pace and whine

Yes Deska paces and it drives me nuts too! He goes round and round the coffee table. He is worst when he is waiting to go for a walk but it is also when he doesnt know what to do with himself or when I have shut them inside and he cant go out and bark. Having something to chew on - like a bone, seems to solve the problem but of course he cant always have a bone.

Boy, does my Sheltie pace too

My Tasha is 6 months old and seriously into the pacing. She seems to be more into it on weekdays in the evening when we have been at work all day.:( I have an older Border/rough collie mix who is high energy but has learned to mellow out when we do.
I also spend at least 2 hours a day either walking or playing with them. :cool:I don't have anymore I can give them on weekdays.
Will this last forever?
The biggest problem is she does it both out of boredom and apparently when she needs to go out. She will pace and pace then suddenly crouch and pee. Even if she has just been outside.
Also same thing in that she wants out, but not by herself.
Love her, but need to figure out a happy medium.

Could be a possible UTI?

If she's acting like she needs to pee right after being out, this could be a sign a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). You may want to bring her to see a vet to rule this out, as it can be VERY painful.

Sadie goes through bouts of pacing as well (Usually with the change in seasons, she's excited by snow or nice weather) but when Sadie had a UTI, she pace constantly was very agitated, couldn't be still and wanted out all of the time, even right after being out. At the same time she was still bright and happy, didn't really act like she was in pain (her belly wasn't sore) and still enjoyed playing.

UTI- never thought of that

thanks for the info. Tasha sees the vet in a couple of days to be spayed. I will be sure to mention it to him. May even call today to see if he wants me to bring some kind of sample. :confused2:

It would definitely be good to call before her spay appointment, as they will not perform the spay if she has a UTI.

Bailey paces sometimes.

We chalked it up to being a herding dog and that instinctively this is what she does.

When she does this, we say she's "On Patrol".

If it gets to be too much, I tell her to sit, which she obeys and that stops it.
