Panting a lot

Hello, Everyone! I've got a question... does your sheltie pant a lot? I know she has a lot of fur and I do live in Austin where it's very hot, but I've never seen a dog pant so much. It's not really a heavy pant but it's pretty much most of the time -- unless I'm interacting with her such as petting, talking to her, etc. I've taken her to the vet recently but I didn't mention this because I had just gotten her and hadn't noticed. I've had her about two weeks now. She doesn't act like she's in pain because when I talk to her she jumps up and down and smiles all the time and seems really happy.
 
Usually our dogs pant when they are either stressed out, hot, or not feeling well. Since your dog is new to your home....it may just be anxiety about being in a new place.
 
Indy pants non-stop. They say its an indicator of either stress, exercise or heat. I'm not sure with Indy. He certainly pants when he's hot...and he'll pant after barking and playing. But sometimes, he'll just be chilling on the back deck, and pant for no reason. He certainly does not appear stressed out, but pants anyway.

He's doing it as we speak. It's not particularly hot, and he's just lying on the deck watching the sites, but panting away.

I do plan to talk to my vet about it. It's almost like he pants to increase his oxygen intake.
 
Chelsea used to pant a lot.

I figured her 'clock' just ran hot, she was a very active girl though. She'd find the coolest place she could at home, as FAR away from the wood stove as she could get, and pant. April, will lay 18" in front of the stove in the winter, and soak up the heat, and not pant a bit.
 
Bentley is a big panter. He pants a lot--especially in the summer, even when we are inside. He's not stressed. He often pants while relaxing. I think he gets warm easily, and unfortunately for him, I can't keep the air on below 70 all day! (That's as warm as he likes it!)

Even when we are outside, and come back in, he takes a lot longer to stop panting than Lexi. He has just always been that way.
 
Zak is more of a panter when we come in from the heat than Maggie. He also foams up when playing out in the heat and runs and runs. I am thinking it is the heat as it is so darn hot.
 
i also live in a very hot city and in the tropic that normal has 35C in the day and 100% of humidity :dead: and my fergus pants most of the time and we found out it was hot. what we normaly do and i learn it here reading on this forum is giving him ice or lot of water or even cold water and sometimes vainilla ice cream which he loves. also we bath Fergus every 15 days and till now he havent had any skin problem. when it rains he loves to go outside to take a shower:lol: of course after that he loves to find his mom (me) to dry him with a towel. :rolleyes2:

other thing good we do is to turn on a portable fan in front of his crate specially in the hot nights, when u know u wont be around to watch him.:wink2:

I'm so relieved to hear that other people's Shelties pant a lot also! I figured it was just the heat mixed with the fact she's wearing quite a heavy coat! I'll try those tips of ice water and vanilla ice cream-- bet she'll love that. I do put a fan towards her sometimes and she seems to like it, less panting, but still usually a light pant. Our electric bill has been so high this summer we don't turn it down passed 78 so poor baby probably is a bit warm.

I ordered a furminator and maybe this will help her be cooler when some of the unneeded hair is gone. THANKS everyone!
 
Yes the furminator helps, but one thing i forgot to add is to check the bed she uses i dont know if ur girl uses normal dog beds or crate, in my case those things dosent work because those one for the material increase his heat and pants more. mine sleeps in a crate and he use to use a big heavy blanquet to make a work of a comfortable bed then i realize that was also heating him up when he took that outside his crate and leave it in the garden.:lol: so he just use a light blancket and thats heaven for him:yes:. Also is good to put crate in the freshes part of the house they normaly find that place to refresh. but normaly Fergus sleeps with the fan on and it also has increased the bill but well the most important is my fergus is safe.:wink2:

what i normal do is to touch him if he is hot or not when he pants. and other thing i read here from the experts (fergus is my first dog) is to cool them in the pool if u have one, i dont have one but i bought one for kids he loves it he jumps inside and stuff. the good thing is shelties likes water. :yes:
