Panting....

Indy's pant really has nothing to do with heat.

I now think its a combination of stress and attention getting. That is, he wants attention (I want outside, I want inside, I want walk, I want supper, I want a cookie, I want, I want, I want....) and is stressed if it doesn't get it immediately. So he pants. And while he pants, he's usually trying to climb all over me or jump up. Or attacks Bacca.

It's just super annoying to me and anyone visiting....dog in face, pant, pant, pant. Jump, jump, jump. Just go away, Bad boy!

Any ideas how to fix it? I'm guessing redirecting his behaviour in some way and rewarding it. Not sure where to redirect him to, though. It has to be something that allows me to continue with what I'm doing without too much distraction...otherwise, I would be be paying attention to him anyway, and he wouldn't be panting!

Well, yeah. Like I said my border collie used to do the same thing. I just made her "Go to mat". It was something that a trainer taught me a very long time ago. When she didn't get what she wanted, after a while she just quit panting. I'll see if I can find instructions on the web.

Okay, I found this site:

You can use just about anything for a mat, but it is convenient if you have several that are all a like. I like handkerchiefs, because you can carry them in your purse and use them when you are visiting friends. When you have several of them, you can put them in different rooms, too. It doesn't matter about the size, as long as they can see it, and lay on it (even if their foot is all that's on it, that's okay). Good Luck!!!

I have the same problem with my pup! However she doesn't pant she whines... the same whine she uses to let me know she needs to go to the bathroom. Then I take her out and she doesn't need to go- she just wanted my attention! She learned quick that whine= mom's attention to get what I want. I must admit I buy into it because she won't stop unless I do. So any suggestions on how to make her stop? I agree with Barb it is annoying :(
Seems like she's got me trained....

I would try teaching her "Quiet" or "No Bark" and never give in, when she whines. For "Quiet" I waggle my index finger in front of the dog and say "Quiet" in a firm voice, click and treat when she quits whining. It's easiest to do this when you think the dog is winding down and getting ready to quit. I have only used this for barking, but it should work on whining to. Its really important to be consistent and firm about this, or it won't work. If you think they can't learn it, my 4 month old sheltie puppy, knows and responds well to "Quiet". He will still start to bark, but "Quiet" and the finger wiggle will stop him most times. Sometimes he is only barking to get attention from us, like yours whines, then we cross our arms and turn our back to him (he hates being ignored). It is important that you start this ASAP, because I know how annoying that whining can be and it will only get worse as long as you give in to it. Also, hang a bell or wind chime on the wall next to the door the dog goes outside to potty. Every time you put your girl out, use her paw to ring the bell, say "Good outside" and she will start to ring the bell or wind chime to let you know when she wants out. It also, helps if you are in another room and don't see her go to the door. Good Luck!!

You know that whole bell thing is a great idea! I never thought of that one! But do you think she will just start ringing the bell when she wants to go outside to play and not only when she needs to potty? My puppy is clever like that . For some reason that sounds like something she would do! I will definately try it out and see how it goes. Ya my pup is a little over 5 months, hopefully not too late to learn the "no bark" command. I must say i have been unsuccessful teaching her that. Everytime she barks and i say quiet and do the little finger wiggle- she gets mad and barks more! (Like she's telling me "Don't tell me to be quiet!")
The other command that I'm having problems with is "Come". Sometimes she listens and sometimes she doesn't... meaning mom gets her daily excersise by chasing her outside for 20 min

Buddy used to be very good at "Here", but this past week he's starting to balk, when we reach for him. We keep a light leash on him, inside and out--that way we can just step on his leash to catch him. I also, have furniture that he gets under and won't come out, then it's really handy if the leash is sticking out. I've heard that they start to become teenagers around 5 months and they love to disobey then. I'm going to start using click and treat for "Here or Come" for a while. Also, it's good to have a long rope or leash for extended "Here or Come". I think we have a 20" rope with a clasp on the end for that. Don't know if that helps--hope so.
