Paw Problem

About two weeks ago when I had Pixie upside down trimming her nails and paw fur, I noticed two little white spots on two pads of one of her front feet -- one on the side, and one on the back. They looked like little whiteheads. They don't seem to bother her and she's not lame at all.

My vet saw her last week and measured them, but didn't have an answer. He said they could be cysts, or little horny growths they sometimes get (although he didn't think so) and we agreed I'd keep an eye on them and he'll see her again next month or sooner and aspirate them if necessary. I should add that she's a big paw licker, although he gave me some medicated pads and she's been much better.

Anyway, the spots are getting bigger and I'm nervous. My vet said he didn't think they would be cancer, but once That Word is out there....well, you all know what that's like. She only has them on the one paw, and I'm stumped. I've researched, Googled, can't find any information. Has anyone ever seen or had anything like this? Thanks ~

Um hard to say without seeing them. I have seen cysts and kerantized growths on the paw pads. I am trying to recall if I have seen anything else more sinster. I guess I have seen squamous cell carcinomas but they didn't start with the foot pad but more the whole toe started swelling and also maligant melanomas -but they were pigmented and dark masses.

Sending prayers it is is nothing serious.

Thanks Suzie and Shelli....that makes me feel better, Dr. Shelli. I'd lean toward cysts too but it's just such an odd place. This is definitely on the pad and no swelling or tenderness on the foot itself.

If they keep getting bigger we'll head back to the vet sooner rather than later.

Ann, see if your vet will send pics to an affiliated vet school. They may have a better idea. My vets contact Cornell, and others I know use University of TN.

This is the best picture I could get. It's tough because of where it is, tucked on the side and back of her paw pad. What concerns me is that it seems to be getting bigger fairly quickly.

Those look very similar to the cysts Nikki (my childhood sheltie) got on her foot a couple of times. Is it hard?
Nikki's got pretty big :eek2:, the vet wanted to lance it and look at a sample of some of the tissue to see what it was. Very gently, he went to lance it, and apparently it was extremely soft in the middle and it sort of popped all the way through. Nikki didn't flinch, be we all did!

After that, he called it an abscess and it didn't come back in that same spot. A couple of years later a similar one started to grow in between the front two toes... but after that it never happened again.

I don't have any pictures, because it was years ago... I was pretty young, I could ask my Mom if you want/need more details - but, I do hope that helps ease your mind a little.
