A shocking video ( at least to me) about breeding.
I was amazed to see how the dogs have changed through out the years. Some dogs these days look completely different from how they were originally supposed to look.

Some of these people are basically playing GOD with these dogs.

This video was sad to watch. Putting puppies to sleep because they didn't fit the "show dog standards".

I am not accusing any breeders of doing this and my comments are only from watching this video and not meant to generalize breeders or the breeding process.

This was actually put out about 1998 or so, caused an uproar in England because The Kennel club wasn't doing anything. Things have gotten SIGNIFICANTLY better since then, and they are trying to model themselves after the Swiss Kennel Club(which is considered the best in the world). The AKC is reluctantly following in their footsteps, the only reason the problem hasn't been as prevalent here is because as Americans we 'bastardize' the breeds which has actually saved our versions of breeds from alot of problems. Fortunately Shelties are too new a breed and havn't had that problem, but can you immagine if Peter Pumpkin had a problem. . . the US sheltie would be in serious trouble. It's why I'm not a fan of overusing a stud dog.

***this video seems to be an update of the original since its 2008****

I have seen it before on CBC here...
This is one of the reasons I am disgusted with Show German Shepherds, always was... Always had preferred working lines and used to think why the hell do the two have to so different...

that's so sad! my little tobias was not of show dog quality because spots of coloring but his breeder just sold him for a lesser price. oh the years of joy i would have missed if his breeder had done such a thing.

im confused by your statement...Show dogs lead a very good life. THey are very well taken care of, trust me there is no way you can show a unadjusted, unkept dog.

I think that statement meant that .....if you watch the video..... the breeders euthanize any dogs that dont meet show dog standards so SWEETLAMB would have never had tobias if he was put down due to his lack of show dog qualities.

Linda, it was a lot about breeds like the Rhodesian Ridgeback, where any dog at all without a Ridge were encouraged by some in the Ridgeback Club to be culled ... 20% of Ridgebacks are indeed born without one... Plus the Ridge it has been linked to a spinal disease...

The other extremes were the King Cavalier Spaniels who were allowed to breed with known hereditary diseases, and a Crufts Pug who had won best in show yet having undergone surgery prior to make it possible for him to breathe... All those dogs were used to continue the lines they were so proud of. Basically the report showed that many of those breeders couldn't see that they were doing was immoral or wrong in any way, and that the British Kennel Club was encouraging such behavior.

sad video to watch but very informative. Some of these breeds have been virtually destroyed since people moved away from what these breeds originally were used for.

I think it is disgusting that dogs with these major health problems are being bred after the problems are discover just for the sake of winning in the show ring. It is one thing not to know and discover it later, quite another to knowingly go ahead. Also culling in this day and age. You can remove a dog from the gene pool without killing it. It is called spaying and neutering. Difficult in the 50 and 60s but not now. Such breeders who engage in these activities should really examine their ethics.

Gives people who are trying to do it right, a bad name.
