Peeing indoors

Declin has been peeing indoors for the past few days. He has never had any accidents in the house except for when he had cortisone shots for allergies (back in September). Yesterday when I let him out of the crate he ran right to the door and had to go out, but I had literally just gotten out of the shower. So he peed on the carpet by the door. Normally if he has to go that badly he's whining and barking in his crate. Nothing. Today I was working on a lesson plan and he walks right over where the tile from the kitchen stops onto the rug and LIFTS HIS LEG and starts peeing. No warning, no 'I need to go out".

I have no idea what his problem is. He is almost two. He should know when he needs to go potty. He is usually very good about going over to the door and hitting the spring door stopper when he needs to go out… But both of these times he's just started peeing.

He is neutered, and I clean up the pee with Nature's Miracle. And he isn't doing it in the same spot. And it's not like I don't exercise him, play with him, or pay attention to him. But I am a grad student so I do have work that I need to get done and I can't spend every waking moment giving him my complete and undivided attention.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this behavior? Because it's significantly less cute to have to clean up a large amount of pee from a 30-lb. adult Sheltie than it is from 5-lb. puppy who is learning.

My advice would be to take a urine sample into your vet to make sure Declin doesn't have a UTI. If that comes back negative, your vet may want to do blood work to make sure there is no underlying health issue before you decide that this is behavioral.

I agree with Trini that he possibly has a UTI. (also, that blood work might be needed)

I was having the same problem with Callan who is now about 20 months old. He was 100% house trained, but suddenly a few months ago, he decided that my green oriental area rug was much better than grass....and he started to pee and poo non-stop on it.

It's not like he didn't have lots of opportunity outside, he just decided on his own to do this. No UTI, just purely behavioural.

So I removed all the area rugs around the house leaving only bare floors....including door mats. It's been a month now, and no accidents. Go figure!

The oriental rug.....spent $400 to have it professionally cleaned, but I still will not put it down again until I'm sure.

Bottom line....yes, you should always consider a relapse in training could be medical.....but 2 year's still will test their limits. For that reason, Callan is still in his xpen at night. I experimented leaving him out a few times, but he started playtime at 2 a.m. Back to the pen, Callan!
