PetCo shaved my dog!!!!

shaved shelte

Stephanie- that was really a screw up to say the least. What groomer worth anything would not know you should not shave a sheltie?? That said I have to admit when we got our first sheltie many years ago (many), in our ignorance, we asked a groomer to buzz cut our sheltie to help him with the heat. She protested-- we insisted and so she did it. It was not as short as your dog but it was a huge mistake. It took well over a year for him to look like a sheltie again. With fur as short as that on your dog you need to be very cautious of sunburn. Poor pup, I know she feels very awkward without her coat. Sorry that this has happened. I am not sure there would be a suable offense here but PetCo ought to have the groomer write a letter of apology to you, return your money and offer you something for what happened. I wonder if that groomer is still employed and if so why?

I'm so sorry about Hailey

I would be FURIOUS! I agree with woof that no groomer worth anything would have done this. Even on dogs that do get shaved, it should not have been done without the permission of the owner.

I'm still fairly new to owning a sheltie, so I don't know anything about how long it takes for the hair to grow back, but I will be praying that Hailey's grows back at lightening speed!

(((HUGS)))

Petco who?

OMG, your poor baby! I think they would have had to restrain me if I walked in and saw one of my girls like that. I seriously would have gotten the clippers and shaved the groomer and then looked at her and asked her if she felt naked! Then they would have promptly had me escorted to the nearest jail by the police! hehehe! I won't go to Petco ever again in protest! Poor baby! She is a beautiful girl. My three girls send be hugs and licks to Hailey! We hope her hair grows super fast!

Petsmart shaved my dog!!!

Hi I also had my sheltie shaved, it was at Petsmart. I had asked to trim a 1/2 inch. I did't pick her up my husband did, he did not know that shelties don't get shaved. It wasn't to the skin like yours. It will grow back, my sheltie has grown back in 3 months. I feed her blue buffalo dry dog food fish & potato, I don't give her anything else. I can only find this food at Petsmart. Good luck with your dog.

Thank you for all the support, and the comments on my blog.

Hailey's on all my marketing for my pet photography business (because I'm biased and all) - but now she doesn't have that gorgeous memorable sheltie coat!!! And I give out those business cards when people stop to pet her and say how pretty she is... and then mention they have a dog/cat. So PetCo's kinda screwing my business on top of it all.

OH! And I stopped at a rest stop yesterday and had my little naked sheltie... Someone comes over and asked what kind of dog she was. Me: "She's a sheltie" Person: "Um, don't shelties have HAIR?" Ugh.

For the good news, I think my dog has extremely fertile hair folicles, as she already has a hair ridge growing on her back.

I am SO sorry for your bad experience

I'm so sorry, I'm all teary eyed just looking at her.

I can't even begin to imagine how a groomer could accidentally shave a long haired breed's coat unless specifically requested by the owner. I suppose if she was terribly matted maybe, but she obviously had a nice coat, I can't believe he/she did not even consider phoning you before doing such a thing!

I wish I could say something to make you feel better, I feel sick and horrified at what the groomer did so I can only imagine how distraught you must feel. It will grow back but sadly it takes a long time, at least 6 months.

Since you use her in advertising your business, DEFINITELY go seek legal advice, you should be receiving damages for what they've done to you and your dog, emotionally as well as financially.

I have a beautiful sable girl too. I'd be happy to have Sadie model for you if we're not too far away, although I know she'd be no substitute for your own girl. Sadie is a year old now and has a very nice, full coat for a young pup.

btw, your photos are beautiful, you're obviously very tallented :smile2:

oh good heaven. Three of my latet babie came to me haved in a lion cut. I almost choked when I went to pick them up from the guy who was giving them up to me. He said they became matted and tangled because he did not want to groom them, so he took them to PetSmart. They shaved them poor little babies. I told him shelties should never be shaved. I spent months patiently brushing a poor little girl who had such horrible tangles and matts and nails curling sideways. I am a firm believer that no sheltie should ever be shaved.

I am so sorry they did this to your baby. To me the shelties fur is what makes them so beasutiful and makes them stand out

How long did it take for their hair to grow back?

There's some cursory signs of hair regrowth... hopefully it speeds up!

Smillner I hope you were asking me this. Shanny and Maizies hair is pretty thick now. It took about 6 months for them to get what looked like sheltie fur back, Holly is still kind of bald because she has thyroid problems. WE call her "Barely Hairy Berry"

Thanks! I figured it would be about 6 months. Hoped you'd say it was sooner though!

Hailey's mad at me now since I accidentally dropped her on the wood floor. Poor pup's had a rough month! (She's fine. She just started to jump from my arms... and then decided otherwise mid-way through.)
