Phoebe not drinking and other issues.

Hello and welcome to the Sheltie Nation.

I agree with all of the others.

Definitely let us know how old she is. That can definitely give us some information to help you out.

Thanks for the responses everyone!!!

Phoebe was born on 03/28/10 and we got her from a pet store in the area...

We have had luck mixing her dry kibble with warm water and letting it soak up water. We also put a bit more in the bowl and she drinks that. She is not drinking from the bottle and she drank a good amount from her bowl after one of her mid night potty breaks.

We're a little bit less concerned about her water intake as she seems to be peeing well...although a bit too much inside (5 inside and 4 outside).

She seems to be warming up a bit more, but still VERY shy. I grew up with a Siberian Husky who was active and into EVERYTHING from day one and a lab rescue beagle who was 1.5 yrs old when we got her (didn't know grass, sun, stairs, ANYTHING) and as far as I can remember even SHE was less hesitant that Phoebe is...I know its different strokes for different canine folks...just a bit worrysome.

Any hints helping our puppy to eliminate outside? We take her out often, watch for circling and try to get her out before hand, but she likes going on our floors a bit more than outside...all she wants to do is play outside when we take her out...even at 3am. Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone!!

Jamie, Kate, and Phoebe

I'm not sure if you free-feed or not, but if you do, then limit her meals to 2-3 meals a day and take her out after that. Chase was 95% potty trained when we brough him home thanks to the rescue but after he drank water he always peed. I just limited the water for about a week to when I was home so that I could keep an eye on him and take him out right after he drank water. After that week he got the hang of things and and he has water in his crate when we're gone too.

Welcome to the group!! Are you crate training Pheobe? I found that to be most useful in potty training.

Take her outside after she eats, sleeps or plays. Take her to the same location in the yard each time so she associates that area with potty. I would take her out at least every two hours whether she signals or not. If she hasn't peed in two hours and you take her out and she still doesn't pee, put her in the crate for 15 - 20 minutes and take her out again. Continue until she pees, then THROW A PARTY!! Go overboard with praise for peeing in the potty spot. Use the same word for peeing and pooping over and over again. I tell mine, "Go peepee in the yard, do good peepee." They know exactly what I mean. My daughter's dogs respond to "It's tinky time." Whatever you choose, use it over and over again so Pheobe knows what you mean. Shelties are smart, she'll catch on before you know it.

BTW, I can't believe no one has said..................we love pictures!
