Please Help, Oily greasy coat, itching and smell

What are you washing her in? Deska went through a phase with awful skin. I was put onto a medicated wash by the vet (called Malaseb here), I leave it in for 5min then wash out, it does wonders. I remember the vet said skin problems are common in long coated dogs when the air isn't circulating to their skin, so lots of brushing can also help.
 
Caro thank you so much. Your post is one of the only ones that I have read that explained a connection between air circulation and long haired dogs causing a possible skin problem.

I was looking at the thyroid count of 1.42....it bears no resemblance to the counts that are being recorded for Bacca who is hypothyroid. they must be using a different measure than my vets use......Average range for Canine T4 is 15.0 to 51.0 nmol/L; Free T4 14.0 to 40.0 pmol/L, Canine TSH 0-0.60 ng/ml.

Supplements are an option, of course, but I think the problem is much more systemic than just adding a few additives. For a problem this severe it does speak to something that needs drastically changing in the diet for starters.

I assume that you are now off the Beneful? What are you feeding now? I would probably lay off anything with Chicken and migrate to either Lamb or Duck formula, but keep it simple to start. If you trying to eliminate allergins you don't want to introduce a whole lot of new stuff that you have to eliminate after.
 
Im going try to answer everyones questions all at once. We took her off the Beneful back in October. We are feeding her Natures Recipe Grain Free, Chicken, sweet potatoes. Do I need to switch her again? Yes she does lick her feet alot and gets red blotches on her skin. Currently bathing her in
Mal-A-Ket derma pet medicated shampoo, its what the vet gave us. It gets her beautifully clean but only temporarily ............
 
If you haven't already go to Central Illinois Sheltie rescue's website. They have a great page on thyroid issues in Shelties. Your Sheltie's numbers appear to be low for a Sheltie according to them and they have much experience with Shelties and thyroid issues. You may want to print the info there and take it to your vet.
 
I had the odor with max and yes it thyroid was a bit low and he was going to a allergist, who retired! Max got bad again so now we have him on a hypoallergenic food, and he is doing so much better. Yes i tried the grain free, cooking food, this poor dog never knew whatwas going to be in his plate. If i were you i would try hypoallergenic food first, if that doesn't work then take him to an allergist/dermatologist. Feel free to pm me. Max had that odor when we rescued him. The only reason the problem came back is because I wanted to,stop the cortisone and get him on a more natural diet. I also switched vets because they were not getting him better and since then, he is, because my vet will work with me. Good luck and don't give up, i know how frustrating it can be for both.
Does he shake his ears too, besides biting his feet?

Best product I ever tried for Harper's skin problems. I rubbed it really well in between her toes also.

Thank you Forum Folks for giving me the word up on Maleseb. So far, so good and a little probiotic yogurt thrown in for good measure, in her food.

My Finnegan, who just turned one, has also been scratching - usually in the morning, the back of his front legs. No visible hair loss or irritation, but annoying to wake up to! I switched him to Fromm 4 star grain free just in case food was an issue but no improvement. Fromm food was rated 5 stars on food advisor and is made in USA. Can't say that my dogs love it - so wondering if anyone else has experience with it! Also gave Finn a bath using the Chris Christiansen products - wow, amazing results!

The constant itching, arghhhh the absolute worse. I was in overdrive trying to get her better but oh it is a challenge not to just scream for her to stop scratching!!!!!


Maleseb is only in it's second use this week so far, and it will take a little longer for results to come about. I have never heard what you suggested and will check it out on the web. Thxs for the heads up.
