Poopcicles - apparently quite yummy

In one of the other threads several people mentioned the fact that their Shelties are, at times, poop eaters.

Meggie is obsessed with frozen poop. I mean, seriously obsessed. It makes me what to vomit! My sweet little girly girl eating poop.

My question is this: Is she going to make herself sick, get worms or something from eating poop? Is it dangerous in any way.

I swear I want to take something out in the yard to throw at her when she does it. I'm forever running after her in my slippers, getting my socks wet from the snow! Of course, she thinks that's a game and starts dodging Mommy at every turn!!

I'd appreciate any input in how to break this disgusting habit. Please people, help me out here!

The only thing I know, is to pick it up as fast as they poop it out. I am daily out there...............picking up the poop..............picking up the poop........................"Jjjaaannnn whatcha doin?" McKinley asks...................... .....................picking up the poop!............picking up the poop...............YUCK!:dead:

Ahh.. a thread I can sink my teeth into (metaphorically of course!)

From what I have been able to find out on the web and TV, it's not uncommon. I was watching a show on animal planet where it talked about male lions eating rhino poo to up their testosterone(sp) before challenging other lions. While it doesn't appear to be bad in and of itself, it would sure seem like a good way for animals to cross-contaminate. Common sense would dictate that if your body evacuated something, eating it would be uhm.. redundent.. I have tried everything under the sun to get Deja and Darby to quit. There is a product called 'Deture' available at pet stores and there are a ton of home rememedies.. We put them on Deture for two weeks as perscribed. It had Zero effect. The one I had the best luck with was pineapple. Feed them a wedge with each meal..

The problem for us more northern folk is that they aren't eating warm slimy smelly poo.. they are enjoying a nice odorless poocicle and so anything you add to their diet seems to get negated by the cold.

The best solution I have going at the moment is supervised potty breaks and poo bags.. They can't eat it if it's not there. Now with that being said, I'm like 25% successful.. the 6am potty break in the morning before my first cup of coffee just hasn't made it into my schedule yet..

We're in the north also but Sadie wouldn't touch it if it was cold or icy, only if it was fresh and warm :dead:

I tried giving her meat tenderizer which I read could make it taste bad but it didn't help. I just made sure we picked it up right away and it seemed to stop the habit, since she'd only eat her own poo most of the time. :dead:

My husband says she still tries to eat it from time to time but I've not seen it.

Here's a funny quote from my husband on your dogs eating dog poop!

Let me preface by saying this is meant to be funny:wink2:

"If the quality of dog food wasn't so good than the poop wouldn't be so appealing and good to eat....they should add to the label food so good your dog will eat it twice"

We should make a poll here on dog food vs poop eaters:lol:

I know this is the answer, but when one of them poops at 11:00 p.m. and it's 0 degrees with the wind chill I'm just not that into walking out to where they've done their business and pick it up. :(

So, I guess I'm out to the yard to hunt for poopcicles. I should take Meggie with me, she'd direct me to where I should go, but then we'd fight over who got to pick it up!

I've actually thought this may be the problem!!! Although, I'm not sure that marketing strategy would be effective! :)

rofl.. So let me see if I understand this..

If the dog food is good, the poo will be as well? Thus a high quality dog food manufaturer could promote their product this way?? That's a comercial I can't wait to see..

"Fido love Bow-Wow so much he goes back again and again and again.." (insert video of a brown-faces dog with a poo-eating grin)
