Poopsicles and high fiber diet

Not sure if I should post this under "Behavior", or "Health,"...but here goes. I saw on a t.v. show this morning that when dogs eat their own poo...one of the reasons might be their diet is too high in protein, too low in fiber, and a change to a high fiber diet might help detour this behavior?

What percentage of fiber is best for a sheltie...and what % of protein is best for them as well?

Any thoughts? We've tried all the other ideas...and for awhile now have been following them outside to be ready for the "collection" right away. I mean...it's not like we want to leave the yard dirty...but it would be nice to let them go outside for 30 minutes or so and play without having to police their pooing! lol

We've also tried pineapple, but not fresh cut. I'm going to give that one a shot. Only used canned before, and it did nothing.

Thanks!

I'm curious to hear what folk have to say about this, as I'm in the process of switching my boys to a high protein diet (Orijen). I'm having second thoughts (for other reasons - e.g. they seem to be ravenously thirsty all the time), so if there are other reasons against high protein, I'm open to hear it too!

Sure hope we can get some input on this. I'm not thrilled with trying the fresh pineapple...very doubtful it will help... I guess I am saying I've "been on all the rides before," (lol) and doubt it will do any good. However, the high fiber/low protein is very curious??? I'd always gone with Wellness CORE...which is high protein. I have switched in the last month or so, to a more "regular" food for them (Kirkland Chicken & Rice) due more to occasional vomiting issues with one of our boys...and it has helped 100%...but it would be nice to have a percentage point to judge food on for this issue. Not something I gave much thought too before now.

I know there are many reasons they do this....one of which is they see us clean it up...so they do it too. Ruling out one by one... I'm inclined to think this is it for our babes. I'm also working on slowing them down when they eat. Don't know if it is helping...but it can't hurt their tummies! ;-) I wonder what possesses them to eat so fast. Both our boys used to be such slow, and gracious eaters. Then, all of a sudden, it was like they haven't eaten in days! lol

Fiber in Diet

Just wanted to mention that since nobody had any thoughts on how much fiber might be necessary to offset the poopsicle temptation...I decided to try something on my own. I did not switch food again...although fyi...the food we use is 4% fiber... What I did do is start putting a handful of plain o'l Bran Cereal without anything else in it...in their dishes with both meals of the day. I have to say that it appears to be helping. Our littlest offender did pick one up before I could remove it...and he even spit it out and walked away a few steps sort of in disbelief.. Nothing has worked long term except maturity though...so time will tell. Keep your paws crossed! It's such a simple answer if it works!

Layla outgrew it. I used to have to watch her like a hawk. Rarely, now, she'll come in with a whiff of "poop-breath." (Kiss me, you fool!!!) :rolleyes2:

Ahhhhh, there's nothing quite like puppy, POOPY breath!! LOL For a few months now, we have had to go out each and every time any of our three needs to go. Actually, this whole thing started with our 13 year old doing it to her own..then our "middle child" picked it up from her during his puppyhood...but rarely does it anymore...and now our "youngest" does it more than any of the rest ever did. So far....as of this afternoon....still no "snacks"! lol

I wondered if what started it with our oldest was maybe her system was/is not processing her food properly and therefore...smells like food to herself. I'm sure the other two are just playing follow the leader...well..at first that was it. It quickly became a habit...almost a game to get it before we could pick it up!

My guys seem to have outgrown it as well.

Don't know if it was age or diet. Maybe they only like their poo frozen. But no more poop eating going on here!
