Possible yeast infection?

Hi everyone!

My guy Mister just turned 10 last month and has been having ongoing skin problems for awhile now. My husband and I rescued him 2 years ago so I'm not sure how long he may have had this problem. He was diagnosed with having Hypothyroidism and has been on medication for a year now. I thought the meds would help his condition but it is still ongoing. He has really dry flaky skin patches that are yellow in color. He also has a spot of black on his belly. The dryness started on his belly and is now on his back. He also has a foul odor and I noticed one of his paw pads have turned yellow and crusty. It doesn't seem to bother him at all though. He has an appointment on Monday to get bloodwork done to renew his prescription. I plan on talking to the vet yet again about this problem but I was wondering if this sounds like a yeast infection or if anyone else has had similar experiences. In the past his vet has put him on antibiotics and gave me a medicated shampoo to use and it goes away but always seems to return. I had to basically diagnose the Hypothyroidism myself last year after seeing many of the symptoms so I wanted to approach the vet with as much information as I could. I just want to find a way to manage this! Thanks in advance!

Kristina, welcome to SN.

I suspect to properly diagnosis your Sheltie's skin issue, you need to ask your vet to do a skin scarping (or in come cases they will want to do a punch biopsy taking a sample from problem area) and send the samples to a lab to be tested. Your Mister is already being treated for thyroid issues and if his thyroid readings are now within normal range these skin issues are probably not thyroid related. Just a guess, but it sounds like this may be some form of Staph infection, but without testing to know the particular strain of Staph, you won't know what antibiotics are effective and what ones won't be.

Thanks so much for your reply. I will ask the vet to check for this then and hopefully we can finally sort it out and get proper medication for it.

I have had the same issue

I feel I have gone through everything to help my dog stop itching. She had so much hair loss and red swollen paws. Big yellow crusty-ish patches on her back and behind her ears. I have tried several vets and finally one said "we don't really know what is causing so many skin problems".

My current vet said she has a yeast infection. Probably from all the useless antibiotic use to control her itching. What has really helped my girl is shampooing every week with Douxo Chlorhexadine PS Shampoo. It's $27 on Amazon and $50 at my vets but this has helped out so much. You can also by the one gallon jug of Chlorhexadine also on Amazon and add it to your regular dog shampoo. But shampooing once a week seems to control the yeast and itching by about 95%. She is on a raw diet (Northwest Naturals) and that has helped tremendously too. She is 15yrs old! So it is a constant battle at her age but this has helped the most!! I have spent thousands on useless test and meds. So over it! I have learned more just reading on my own. Hope that helps if your vet doesn't come up with anything.
