I wasn't sure where to put this, so I'm putting it here since it's somewhat dog food related and my question is food related.
I've been looking at lower protein foods (20 percentile range) and I've noticed a lot of the foods I'm looking at have potato listed as one their top 5 ingredients.
Here's my concern:
I had Miko on Eukanuba back in the day. Then we found out about Natural Balance Duck and Potato for his allergies. I think all of NB's are potato and something else. Anyhow, he did better, but he still had dry skin and scratched all the time. When all the recalled food came out (I believe that included what I was feeding), I went to Nature's Variety Prairie Chicken. Wow. The difference was incredible. No more dry itchy skin. It wasn't perfect, but he was so much better. Then I transitioned to grain free and he was doing even better.
Since he has been on grain free (for the past 3 - 4 years or so) he rarely scratches, his skin isn't flaking, he's not as allergic to thing (he used to walk on the grass and then start licking his feet, sometimes so badly, he'd make them swell up).
So....I'm wondering, was it the potatos that was making his skin dry? Was it grains? I'm thinking it was potatos as Miko did better on NV Prairie, which doesn't have potatos listed as one of the top ingredients. I've never heard of potatos doing that to a dog, mostly because many times if they have allergies, they put them on a diet that typically includes potatos. Weird.
Anyhow, I'm just curious. Because I don't mind going to a grain food (well, with some grains) but I'm thinking maybe I should stay away from the ones with potato as a main ingedient. OR do you think maybe I should stay away from any grains as he did even better on grain free?
If I stay in grain free, I'd have to go with a higher protein (low 30's) as the only grain free in the 20's is Now! and that has potato flour listed as its 2nd ingredient and potato as its 8th.
So do I go grain free in the 30 percentile or grains and be in the 20 percentile. What to do, what to do. Thoughts?
(I really hate trying to find foods. On the upside, I did find a lot of them that I like, I just need to decide which way to go.)
