Living on the west coast of Canada we have very few thunderstorms (like MavRyder mentioned), but we do have rain. Both of our shelties are very willing to be outside and walk and play in the rain which is great. If we had to wait til the rain stops for them to go do their business they would have to hold it from October to June!!
Potty outside in thunderstorm... alternative?

I thought when I moved here I would not miss all the Vancouver rain and months with out sun. After 2 winters here, and I am originally from Quebec, I would trade SD weather for Vancouver any day of the week.

I think that there where 3 Tstorms during the seven years I lived in Vancouver. My boys will bark there heads off at the thunder, especially Ryder. Maverick prefers to sit in my lap. If I see a storm coming on I try to get them out there before it starts. If its first thing in the morning I have to go out with them so I can coax them to come back in. Barking at the thunder!! Is too much fun. And it scares the heck out of me!Luckily there has only been a few morning storms since I have been here. I am also grateful that middle of the night storms don't get them up while they are sleeping in their crates.
and I thought Dixie was the only one to bark at thunder. we are in summer now so chance of thunderstorms practically every day. so a week or so ago, the thunder started and Dixie went charging out the doggy door to bark at it. I did make her come in as she was getting wet- had to close the dd so she couldn't go back out. so they lose the open door policy when the thunderstorms start up.
now Callie on the other hand- she has a raincoat and will hold it forever if she has to. I have had to put on my raincoat, her raincoat and take her out on a leash if the rain lasts too long
Oh gosh. My Neechee would bark at thunder no matter what the hour. (Made for some VERY tired people sometimes.) It was just so much FUN!
When Neechee got older and was recovering from a stroke, we had about a two week period of snow, sleet, and very cold weather (unusual for Georgia). My mom came up with using a huge golf umbrella, and propping up the little guy while he pee'd and poo'd. (He was a little shakey on his pins for a while afterwards.) So imagine if you will, a very tiny Sheltie being carried into the yard (he was all of 12 pounds), set down in the specially-cleared and dried area provided for his use (courtesy of my dad), propped up by being leaned against my cane, and doing his business on command! Now imagine doing this every 4 hours. And yes, we did it for about three months. He recovered and lived another two years (to age 17) but always had to be carried up/down stairs.
Bela is quite different. She refuses to do ANYTHING in the rain. We had a big standoff in a morning rainstorm last week - I refused to go in until she did her duty. She came in drenched (so was I), and refused to have anything to do with me until she dried off. Plus, she HATES thunder and I have to used Rescue Remedy on her.

Last week I had to put 2 chairs in front of the two side windows to the front door because I was afraid Ryder was going to jump through them.

I usually just don the rain coat and go out. Pups learn very quick to hurry up and go. The adults I just send out into the backyard and let they get soaked. They know that I won't let them in until they go so they make it quick.
MavRyder- I grew up in SD and agreed the weather there is something else. Blizzards, hail, T storms, wind etc. Minn. is similar but nowhere as bad. The good thing is if you don't like the weather wait a minute, it'll change.
Of course you have heard of the Great SD Calm of 1896. One day across the whole state of SD the wind suddenly stopped blowing and all the cows fell over.

I used to walk Maverick 2X a day every day. I don't think I ever missed a day. Now some days the dogs don't get walked. I feel so guilty. I have a large fenced in yard but it is just not the same as a good walk.
