Potty Signs

My older dog, he chuffs. He doesn't really chuff for anything exept to go out. I'm not sure where he learned that. He was originally paper trained, so when I housebroke him, he'd do the stare thing while staring at the door. then it graduated to chuffing (he's not a big whiner).

My younger dog, Koji, he whines. BUT here's the problem, he whines about EVERYTHING. he's hungry, he's bored, he wants to play, he needs to go out, he doesn't want to go to bed, etc.

So, how do you teach them to give you a signal, that's different? BTW, I was told not to teach them the bell thing, because if you cant' hear it, then what? We have a 3-story house, I doubt I'll be able to hear it in some rooms.

Thoughts on how to teach something new? Anyone? Please. Oh the whining!!! I cant' handle it anymore. hehehe :rolleyes2:

Sadie is EXACTLY the same way, she whines whenever she wants something and it drives me crazy some times!

When she's being annoying and whining I tell her I try to calmly and assertively say 'SHH!' Then I make her lay down. She does it the most often in the morning in anticipation of her morning walk. Some times she whines when she's lying down, I do the same thing and she'll usually be quiet. She also does it when she's bored, or one of us goes out. I've concluded its the way she is and making her lie down (giving her a job), and making her stay seems to work the best.

As for whining to go out, I try to discourage it when I can. She also knows how to go to the door when she wants out. If Sadie isn't with one of us its pretty much always because she's at the door. If she whines to go out I make her lie down for a minute or two, then as her, 'Do you want to go outside?' When she runs to the door I tell her she's a good girl and let her out. She doesn't whine by the door too often anymore.

I trained my dog to ring the bell when she wants out to potty or play. She does it consistently and we haven't had an accident since. I live in a 2-story home and I can hear it since I live in a relatively quieter home. I use 3 bells to make it as loud as possible lol. When I do miss it, she runs to where I am and whimpers. Her knowing how to use the bell is probably what I'm most proud of about her. Shelties are so smart.

I taught Lexi how to do the exact same thing. It's been working wonderful ever since she was a pup! I used a huge jingle bell which you can get at Hobby Lobby or any craft store!
 
Bell Technique??

Alright...I read somewhere(I can't remember who said it) that when you take out your pup to go potty you ring the bell...is that how everyone did it?? I mean, him whimpering at me is enough for me...but my damn boyfriend ignores his whimpering(Poor Caliber...) which leads to accidents...NOT something that we need coming into Winter...it's hard enough having him stay out in the cold at night to do his business. If we could get him using the bell, maybe my b/f will pick up better on it. Constant bell + Lazy Boyfriend = Success?? Quite possibly...one can only hope!

...It's no world wonder why he's such a Momma's boy! LOL :lol:

Hey TaraLynn. Yes, I have the bell hung at nose height. I would bring her nose up to the bell to jingle it, say good girl, and then let her out. I did this every 3-4 hours to do her business when I was training. I found that she understood what I wanted her to do when I brought her nose to it than just ringing it for her. Don't forget to praise like crazy when she pees or poops :biggrin2:

My idea probably wouldn't fly very well with your boyfriend..... If he is the one that is ignoring the dog, he is the one that has to clean up the mess and do it properly. He wouldn't last long at my house! Maybe then he'll get the idea that when the dog is whining, he needs to go out.
