Potty training with no backyard?

Try this one. A friend of mine who lives in a condo did this and it was very
successful.

The indoor potty pads. She spread them out in numbers in an area. Her dog would pick one and go. As he aged she removed one at a time until there was only one pad left.

She didn't place them all over the house of course, she made one big block of them where they over-lapped some.

I have a small back... Area as well. I found the only problem
With potty training indoors... They won't see a problem doing it there in the future. I set up a potty tray (could buy one, but they are costly)

1. bought astro turf from the hardware store (8'x6') cut it up to just the right size.
2.I put one patch by the door with a plastic tray under it with a trash bag with paper towel (easy clean up).
3. Let her figure out to potty there (kept her nice and safe from other dogs in the complex!)
4. After a few uses put the used patch of turf outside where you want her to go.

^_^ though... Angel still confuses carpet and grass, but she's 6 months and makes progress daily! I didn't learn the turf trick till after a few accidents on the carpet.
 
Thank you all for the replies! I'm still kind of torn… Risk of disease vs. risk of not being completely potty trained. My old neighbor's sheltie was trained on puppy pads and even when she was 12 years old they still put down a pee pad for her, just in case. She was never crate trained, though.

I've read of a product called "Nixall" (sp?) and it's supposed to be garden/plant friendly and kill parvo and other disease-causing bugs. I'm thinking of getting some and spraying it on the little green patch by our walkway.
 
Do you have a garage or back patio ?

I brought my puppy home Feb 1st at 8 weeks. Lots of dogs in my neighborhood, and no backyard. Between her not being fully vaccinated, and having a crazy snowy winter (as in, feet of snow piled up everywhere and no grass), I put potty pads in my garage and had her go in there. She was so tiny when i brought her home - only 6lbs ! She had to go very frequently, like every 20 minutes at first when she was awake. She mostly used the pads, although sometimes she missed. When it gets warmer out I plan on scrubbing out the garage to take care of that.

My vet told me by the time they have the 2nd of 3 shots, they have a 'decent' amount of protection. She could start going outside, BUT still no contact with dogs that I don't know, no trips to Petsmart, etc. That is when I started teaching her to walk on a leash, and to potty outside. She transitioned pretty quickly to going in the grass.

Anyway - it can be done without a yard, it just takes a little creative thinking.
