Potty Training!

Well we have had Maggie about a week now she was at petland since she was a puppy and now is amlost 6 months so she has alot of time going to the bathroom indoors under her belt as she wasnt let out to pee ever!

So she is doing pretty good maybe 4 or 5 accidents in the last 4 days but i am pretty sure she shouldnt be having any and i am wondering if i am expecting to much to soon?

I work from home and stay at home with the kids so i am always around and i take her out ALOT to go to the bathroom and most times she does good and goes outside it just drives me nuts when i was just out with her for like 20min cause i am sure she needs to go but she doesnt and then we come in and she sneaks off to go to the washroom where i cant see her, she wont do it in front of me and when she sees me she stops i take her out and she finishes so i am sure she know she is not suppose to do it in the house, any suggestions? Just keep at it? I really try to watch her like a hawk in the house and when i cant she is in her crate it is those times when i am busy with the kids for a sec when she is out that she sneaks off!
 
Like the issue you have with her walking, this comes back to the fact that she was in a small pet store cage for 6 months with no training. While you have a dog with a near adolescent mind, you need to treat her like she's a very young puppy.

You are doing the right thing by taking her out more regularly than would normally be necessary for 6 month old pups. I'd suggest that if you can't watch her, she be crated OR attach her leash to your waist so she has to stay with you and can sneak off to potty.

Start watching her closely to learn her signals that she has to go.

When she does go outside, make a HUGE fuss over her; don't be afraid to look like a fool, Shelties want to know they pleased us. Give her a treat, lots of scratches and pets, and vocal praise in a happy voice.

Keep working with her and you'll get through these bumps in the road.

The only thing I would add is if you take her out and she doesn't make, bring her back inside and put her in her crate (assuming she won't make in her crate?). Leave her there for 10 mins and try taking her out again. Continue this until she finally goes outside. When she goes outside, praise her like no tomorrow and then the extra bonus is she's allowed to stay out of her crate in house. :smile2:

crating might not work with a petstore puppy- the cages would be similar to a crate and she probably went in there when she had to.
I'd go with the leash/watch her like a hawk method :yes:
 
I feel ya

I seem to be having the same problem with my puppy maggiesmom! shes 4 months old, and i didnt her from a pet store, but she is behaving the same way with her potty training.

Any suggestions are appreciated
