Poty training regression.

Poty training has been great. Indy now 5 mos. has been awesome at going poty outside. He pees on command outside. Barks and rings the bell when he wants out. Now this past week he has had many accidents. No warning just pees. Still not in his crate or playpen. Only in kitchen and family room. He is never alone. And playtime out if the playpen and kitchen is limited. Has anyone had issues with regression in poty training. We are still very strict.... outside poty treat play a little outside poty again. When he goes he gets a treat. If he potys inside he is told no. We go out and then to our crate. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Regression usually occurs with a break in routine, a possible trauma, or distraction. Just keep making a HUGE deal about going potty outside. Make sure there aren't traces of potty smell that might be sending conflicting message. Reward with lots of praise when Indy gets it right. Mostly hang in there Savannah wasn't reliable until after 6 mths. It finally clicked, and no more accidents.

First, make sure he doesn't have a urinary tract infection. Second, about that age, for some reason, they all seem to go into this potty every 20 minute phase. Take him out extra often and party and praise the voiding outside. Another thing I have done, is with every accident, I didn't get mad or direct anything to the dog, but I went with "oh, nooooo, oh dear, oh my, etc" like it broke my heart (I think I even cried). The dog realizes that inside apparently wounds you deeply and they care and get it right.

One word: patience! For some reason around 6 months of age, puppies regress with house training. It's happened to every one of mine. I don't know what the reason is, but they all get past it in a week or two. Continue the training as you've been doing and as long as your pup is fine in other ways (eating, drinking, etc.) don't worry about it. If you catch it happening, issue a stern "no" and take the puppy outside as you did at the beginning. It will pass...really!

At 5 months they still can't hold their bladder very long, when Piper was that age he'd 'forget' sometimes when he was playing or excited etc. He'd have the odd accident at least once a month but once he was around 11 months no more accidents (he's 1 1/2 now). Just keep doing what your doing and eventually he'll be accident free.
