Prayers for my sheltie

Please pray for my sheltie. She has an intestinal obstruction. We live in the countryside of Japan, and there are no 24/7 emergency vets where we live. We've visited two vets in the past two days, and at the end of today were told she doesn't need a surgery, and the obstruction could pass, so we should wait. So we went home. She had been on an IV both days, and the second day, wasn't throwing up when we left her at the vet for observation, but now tonight, she just started throwing up feces. So I think she will need a surgery. She does not have the MDR1 gene, thankfully. I just pray she doesn't get worse before we make it to the vet.

The vet opens at 7am. It's 12:15am right now. We'll be there before it opens so we can go in right away.

I love her so much. She's resting right now, laying down in an ex-pen. We are sleeping with her downstairs tonight.

We called the vet this morning, and he insisted that there's no obstruction, and won't do a surgery. He says her intestine is just inflamed, and that she was throwing up because we gave her water, even though we gave her none (She refused water. I only started giving her ice chips from 3am, when she stopped vomiting, and she hasn't thrown up since. It is not just because of the water.) We are at a loss what to do, and are calling everywhere around us. It's Sunday here as well, so a lot of vets aren't answering the phone. Ones who are open on Sunday aren't open until 9am.

Update: We just found a doctor that will look at her, do a barium x-ray, and can do the surgery. The place opens at 9am. So we will go there.

Prayers for you and your girl! I am so sorry she is so sick! I would be worried as well!
Please keep us updated on your progress! I hope no surgery is required and medication will be all it takes for recovery!
Bless you for going the extra mile for her care!

Prayers for you and your pup. Hoping surgery isn't required to make her well.

Oh no, how scary! My puppy actually just underwent surgery for a stomach obstruction a couple of weeks ago. It's amazing how well they recover from major surgery. Paws crossed that your girl will do just fine!

Thank you everyone for your prayers, and warm thoughts.

The vet we went to did confirm the obstruction, but could not do the surgery until tomorrow. So we went back to the other vet who can do it today, and asked him to do the surgery, so he agreed. She is in surgery right now, and I pray it goes well.

@Cara Sandler I'm glad your puppy recovered well! It is so scary. She has been spayed before, and recovered well from that, so I'm hoping she'll be just fine, and we'll be back to normal life in no time!

I understand your despair - it's so horrible when our fur's babies do not
are doing well and we do not have opportunities for help.

Now we hope you will soon be back with good news.

So my sheltie is back from the vet, and the surgery went smoothly! She's not fully awake from the anesthesia yet. We got to bring her home, but will be back so she can get an IV for a few days before she's ready to eat, and drink again. I'm so thankful for the smooth surgery, and hope recovery goes just as well.

It turns out she had swallowed the top, fuzzy, pom-pom part of a Christmas hat on one of her new toys we had gotten her! It was a Kong brand toy. We are going to stick to durable toys like her traditional Kong, and avoid any toys she could chew up from here out. In addition, we plan to keep a journal of everything she happens to eat that's not edible, and other symptoms, like how her stool is, if it passed, if she attempts to vomit, etc. so next time we can catch it early. She's swallowed stuff before, and it's always passed, so I didn't think about it. But now we will be much more cautious.

Thank you for all your comments, and prayers! I will post another update about her post-surgery recover afterwards. I'm so glad that thing is out of her stomach now.

I'm so sorry your pup is not feeling well. I will keep her in my prayers. Hopefully now that the obstruction has been removed she will feel better soon!

I am so relieved to hear that she's out of surgery and doing well! I think you'll be shocked at how quickly she recovers. My dog is also the type of dog who will eat literally anything and also thinks that she only has to listen to me when it's convenient for her, so she is not allowed to run free at home unless she is being supervised. And she wears a muzzle outside so that she can't grab any tasty morsels she finds on the sidewalk. Because, again, she thinks she only has to obey when it's convenient for her ;-)
