Prayers for my sheltie

It was good that there was a good explanation - what relief.

When I read this thread I am happy to Minnie never picking up something without "asking" first
Even at the beach, where there is so much differently.
When she was a puppy she ate everything even seashells.

Absolutely outstanding news!

So happy everything turned out OK.

I sure hope this is the first and last surgery required for an obstruction. :fl
No one wants surgery!

I am so relieved to hear that she's out of surgery and doing well! I think you'll be shocked at how quickly she recovers. My dog is also the type of dog who will eat literally anything and also thinks that she only has to listen to me when it's convenient for her, so she is not allowed to run free at home unless she is being supervised. And she wears a muzzle outside so that she can't grab any tasty morsels she finds on the sidewalk. Because, again, she thinks she only has to obey when it's convenient for her ;-)

That is exactly whay my sheltie is like. Although she listens to us to drop things outside (perhaps because she's on her leash, so she can't run from us), when she's at home and gets something like a slipper she won't drop it and runs away with it unless we grab something tasty to trade for it, in which she'll immediately drop it.

She often will only do tricks when she thinks there's a good reason (like waiting at the door), but if she doesn't see a reason to sit, and there's no tasty treat being offered, she won't always sit.

She's also not allowed to roam the house free.

But now I'm also going to start putting her in her ex-pen when I watch tv, or am working on my computer, in the same room with her too, because I'm not 100% supervising her then either, and a couple times she's gone upstairs while we were watching TV without us noticing because the door wasn't fully shut (sliding door)!

I'm going to start over with her and only allow her to take food I offer her. Everything else she has to leave alone. I just don't want to risk something like this again over a toy, and there are other ways she can have fun, and be mentally stimulated.

So today we went to the vet again, and the vet noticed my sheltie's stomach was swelled, and inflamed, with some liquid coming out. She said she might have to be re-operated on. It might be that the intestine wasn't stitched together well, or that the intestine is sticking to the wall, or another intestine. We called another vet, the one who did her spaying, and she said that it's typical for these symptoms to occur after a surgery like this, and is just part of the recovery progress, but she'd have to see her in person to know for sure. So we have an appointment with that vet today at 3:30 pm. Currently she's on an IV at our regular vet.

We don't really trust the vet who did her emergency surgery. It was just the only vet that was available. I pray if she needs another surgery, she can get it with the vet who did her spaying. Of course, not needing another surgery would be best. So I hope it really is just part of the recovery progress.

Prayers still needed. Thank you everyone for all your support, and kind words. It means so much to me. I wish the best for all of you, and your shelties.

Wow that is a scary time and I am so happy you found some answers with a vet who did a great surgery.
Kongs are great and you can fill them with treats. Very hard to chew Kongs up and it keeps a sheltie busy.
Like your plan. Lil' Lady was tied to my waist to keep her out of trouble. She was a digger as a pup, carpet,
but she never ate the carpet, just dig it up.

Back from the vet! So it turns out the thread that was used to sew her up commonly gives dogs a reaction. They used an ultrasound and found her lymph node was inflamed, not the intestine. So that's good! We were given antibiotics to give to her via shots, and liquid dog food to feed through a syringe at 10cc at a time for tomorrow, then we have a follow-up appointment on Friday. They also told us the bandage can be removed, and actually the wound will heal better without a bandage. So they removed the bandage.

What a relief! We also got a calendar for the network of emergency vets in that city (an hour away from the city we live in), which is really great to have. They take shifts, so that there's always an emergency vet available.

@sable I'm also considering keeping her on a leash while we aren't 100% supervising her, as she'd rather be with us, than in her ex-pen :)

What a relief! Gosh, this has been such an ordeal for you both! So glad that no new surgery is required!

Yes, keeping her on the leash by you is the right thing to do!
Give her a kiss and virtual hug from her friends at Sheltie Nation! :hugs

Just an update, my sheltie's back to her normal, playful, mischievous self! Her incision is healing nicely, and she had her first poop today since the surgery! She's eating dog food soaked up in water, and drinking water normally.

I've been trying out keeping her on a leash around me, instead of leaving her in the ex-pen, and it's working nicely. She's sleeping right beside me right now as I type.

So glad to have my girl almost back to normal <3
