Tesslyn, it sounds as if you're looking for a healthy, pet-quality Sheltie. That's what I sought out when I started in 2005 -- and I knew nothing! It was sheer dumb luck that I found my breeder, and what a gem she was!

I recommend going to the ASSA web site http://www.assa.org/breeders.html
and look for a breeder near you. It may take a while, but you'll be more likely to avoid problems. Right now, in the Mid-Atlantic area, a good pet Sheltie from a good breeder runs between $900-$1600. But it would have to be a pretty spectacular pet quality Sheltie for me to go over $1200.

no more puppies for me for sometime...Kaleigh and Savannah are enough-and now that I survived puppyhood, I am thrilled, but when I was trying to find them-2014, wow, I found prices from $350 to $2500, for a quality puppy, not a show puppy...a sheltie rescue puppy was going for $1500, and the Dam didn't even have registration. Most of the sheltie rescue puppies started there and went up (if memory serves they did include spaying) Just my experience in CO

That is ridiculous. Sorry. Even if it did include spaying wow. I work for a humane society and I will keep the rest of my thoughts to myself here.

I thought it was ridiculous as well..but here is a tidbit I found after getting my pups

"In Colorado, of the 90,000 dogs received, 12,600 were received from outside Colorado, representing dogs entering the state through “rescue channels.” The remainder includes 24,000 dogs returned to shelters, 8,600 transferred between shelters in Colorado, and other movement in and out of the state."

*another tidbit that is ALARMING, is a lot of aggressive dogs come through as rescue dogs, those with history of attack or biting, and get rehomed, or adopted in non suspecting homes. I have seen a lot of claims filed, because this wasn't disclosed until another incident occurs and the pet has to be put down.

I am sure the "rescues" asking those prices were not legit rescues...I strongly suspect they were puppy brokers for mills hiding behind the title "rescue". As more people get educated about pet store pups and mills, the mills are setting up alternate ways to sell their pups without the public realizing where the pups actually come from.

I concur, it was so different this time looking for a quality puppy than 17 yrs ago. Times have changed, and the process was quite the education for me. "Rescue" can be highly profitable-but as you said they aren't truly doing a rescue.

Otherwise, the price of about 2,200 USD and this is not a top show puppy.

I just bought a puppy this year, after looking for a rescue and realizing that rescue shelties practically don't exist in this area (which is wonderful!). I paid about $1200 for mine from a very good breeder, and my puppy has a good pedigree. I can't imagine paying more for than that for one who has a parent that isn't even registered.

I guess $1600 sounds kind of high to me, if you just want a healthy companion dog rather than a show or performance prospect.

In Japan the average pet store was asking anything from 1200 to 2200 (approx in USD) for animals with too many unknowns....breeders asking 2000-3000 for "Japan Kennel Club" champion parents. I ended up getting my Sansa from a breeder that specializes in shelties and has a good rep. She cost me more than my current minivan.....but I visited their operation, had a long chat with them, got a tour, and was convinced it was the best option. Wallet is lighter than I would have liked but they've been in business for 25 years and have a brick and mortar operation I can visit anytime.

Wow! I can understand paying over a thousand for a show quality Sheltie, but rescue dogs? The rescues here in Ohio top out at about $500 for a puppy, and that is after spay/neuter, all shots and microchipping. The adoption fee for my Ida, who came from a rural shelter, was $50. Of course, you don't know what behavior or health issues you might run into with rescues, but that can be the case with any adoption, except from the most careful breeders.

sorry about the confusion over show-prospect, I meant like a well bred dog, who's family has won many shows and usually have good conformation
