Puppies 101 and the deep frost coming!

Hi there

Thought I would start a new thread for the Puppy Alumni of 2014 and with winter coming around the corner!

I posted on a previous thread that Callan suddenly decided to poop twice in the house. Probably my fault, but it got me thinking about the cold and wicked weather that will be upon many of soon, and wondering about what strategies you are going to take with your pups?

I honestly don't remembering going outside in my housecoat in -0 degree weather with Indy or Bacca at 6 a.m. But these days I still go outside with Callan most times. These days we are running at 3 C in the morning. Pretty chilly!

I'm thinking at 9 months, when its dark and cold, I let him out with Indy, they do their business and come back inside when they are ready. My days of sitting patiently on the deck waiting for business to happen are DONE!

We'll be taking Oshie out no matter what. I find it easier to potty train when it's cold.

Lol, it's supposed to be 33C / 92F here tomorrow since we are going into summer and not winter here. We picked up Bonnie early August so I guess we got the tail end of winter and I did go out with her then but she was only 9 weeks old and not potty trained. She turns 5 months old tomorrow and I no longer go out with her. We simply got a doggy door and she takes herself out.

Since Callan is around 9 months now I would say let him out by himself but you could watch him from inside the door the first few times just to make sure he goes?

I agree with you Barb, standing in the cold waiting on business to be done is a thing of the past. I always stood just inside the door with a flashlight so I could keep an eye on things. When there is no sun to heat things up, Bambi always took care business pretty quick to get right back in, she was not a fan of the cold.

Odin seems to prefer the cold. He heats up pretty easy due to his dense undercoat. At 13 weeks he seems to be fully potty trained but we'll see if there's a regression once the snow flys. He currently has run of the whole house unless we're all in the living room we'll block him in there. No accidents in 2 weeks now and he lets us know if he really really has to go. Otherwise he holds it. Last night when I got home from work at 4am there was a good amount of frost on the ground. He seemed to like how it made everything crunchy sounding lol. Crossing my fingers when the real cold sets in I can trust him to go out on his own. He's still supervised for the time being.

We got our first rain in dry California. 1-1/2" overnight. We went out just before it started, went out at 3 for a quick one, and went out in the morning. I got a shower and the dogs got that rain-soft coat. Melli hates wet paws but Cubby and Shay were fine.

We will see when first snow hits, usually Dec. 17th.

Not sure what we will do this winter with Baker. When we had Trace we still needed to go out with them because he loved to eat "poopsicles" - so we had to be there to pick everything up right away.

So far Baker hasn't showed any interest in that disgusting habit. We still need to step out to walk them about 5 steps to the back yard gate, so may as well just stay out until they finish?

We've had a few frosty days so far (but no snow yet - last year it had already been snowing for a month). Luckily Sparta is really quick in the morning. She loves a good night-and-morning's sleep just as much as her owner does, so at 6 am she really just wants to get back to her warm bed.
Hopefully we'll soon get to a point where she can go out by herself, we're almost there, but not quite.

too frosty to potty

hey y'all, what I did for a back up in CO, for days where it gets in the (-) range. I paper trained in a puppy go potty-big litter box deal. For the days when it gets super COLD, it is in the garage and my previous gals used it, phew...Kaleigh doesn't like it, but will use it if I am gone too long on outings and she is home alone. Potty training with all mine took very easily, although Kaleigh being smaller, took a longer time to hold it, I just figured her bladder was smaller so she couldn't, so we did more potty night breaks for her. Getting the new one tomorrow, and it is chilly, never potty trained in winter months, :-(, my puppies came in summer, Kaleigh in spring, so I am wondering HOW this will go with my new addition...I got her the most ADORABLE cable sweater because she has puppy fuzz and I am concerned she won't be warm enough...probably overprotective, but never having a puppy in winter I just wanted to be prepared...we have frost every morning now...

I'm definitely not doing that. I can see that very a very young puppy, but Callan is 9.5 months now!

I think that now with the change to daylight savings, I will starting training him to go outside on his own I'm with Sullivan, time for Callan to be a big boy and go outside on his own at 6 am!!!! I think I'll start tomorrow!
