Puppy broke his leg - what can we do in the meantime?

Long story short, yesterday our 4 months old sheltie puppy landed wrong from too high and broke his left rear leg :( :(.

His leg has to be splinted for the next month or two so needless to say he isn't very mobile. What can I do to keep him entertained until his leg heals? We usually play fetch or tug of war but obviously they're not an option at his current state.

Thanks in advance! Any help would be appreciated.

Poor pup, sorry to hear that.

I'd suggest making sure to try and do anything you can to mentally stimulate him. I think this is important with clever dogs like Shelties anyway, but in your puppy's case it should be especially useful in breaking the tedium for him.

There are various ways to do this, but just as a suggestion, I have one of the products from this company, and my Sheltie enjoys it. There is a bit of physical dexterity required with most of them in addition to the mental side, but with the easier ones (they vary in difficulty, so you'd have to take that into account) not so much that a dog with one back leg out of action couldn't manage. The difficulty is displayed on the boxes and often in the online product descriptions.

I just checked and they definitely sell them in the US too, at least on Amazon.

Sorry to hear about your pup...another member here (belladora) has a young puppy who just broke his leg. She may have some suggestions.

I think Matt is right, though. Mental stimulation is key. I would get one of those food dispensing toys and use that for all of his meals. You can also hide treats around the house (if your pup is a little mobile) that he can find.

totally agree with matt on the Nina Ottoson toys, they are great for mind games. You could also start him with some sniffing exercises. Great time to teach stay too ;)

Sorry to hear about your pup. I also was going to suggest possibly sending Belladora a PM since her pup broke it's leg lastweek. Both of you could be great support for eachother. Praying for a speedy recovery.

How is your pup doing?

Any updates? It was really icy out there tonight, and I kept reminding my husband to make sure the dogs didn't go nuts when he went to the barn, because I was afraid one of them would hurt themselves.
