Puppy color?

I'm so curious as to what color Fred will be when he's older. I've heard that coat colors change as they grow, some places I've read they darken, some said they lighten...it's all so confusing! I'm curious as to what everyone's experienced. Here's a picture of Fred...he's got a dark stripe down his back and a good bit of dark shading here and there. I love it! I hope it stays that way :o

he will stay a darker sable color. usualy sables dont lighten too much, except for sable merles. they tend to lighten up
 
My Rocky was sable as a puppy and even now at 3 is pretty light, just a touch of balck on his ears and muzzle....FoxMan is sable mahogany but the darker over coat of black has only been in the past year or so. He had a darker line down his back at 7 months when he came here...but now he has a lot more black on his back and tail.
 
My Bacca had much the same colouring as your's at the same age.

Then I noticed that that he was left with a dark stripe down his back and on his tail. This continued till about two weeks ago. Now it's gone.

Now at 6 months he has gone fox-shaded and is quite red with only little black markings on his tail.

Even the blaze that he had on his forehead is less pronounced that it was.


All to say that they keep changing. I can't even look to his immediate parents for guidance. Dad is a classic sable with dark guard hair. Mom is lighter - reddish with no dark guard.

Who knows how he will turn out. He's beautiful regardless. I cannot walk down the street without people commenting on him. I think this is unique to Shelties. I don't see people stopping Beagle owners telling them how gorgeous their dog is. But I get stopped all the time. :winkgrin:

No really. Its hard to say at such a young age. It really depends on his parents and his genes.

Sadie's mom was a sable and her dad was a tri. As she gets older she's getting more and more dark fur so I think she's probably going to lose some of her lovely colouring as she gets older and turn dark. My parent's sheltie did the same.
 
Jakes a blue merle and I think he has lightened a little (depends what light you look at him in) but his black areas have broken up a little now.

My Inuit changes colour in the seasons, in the winter he is darker and in the summer he is lighter. My mums BC also has a rusty tinge in the summer but not in the winter.
 
He's probably going to be a nice tri-factored sable.

Most Shelties tend to take after grand-parents and NOT parents, from what I've seen.
 
My sheltie angel Marcus started out life as a sable and white. As he got older, black was mixed in with the sable. That was also the case with my parents sable and white sheltie.
