Puppy potty issue

Disney my beautiful 4 month old sable is doing great at potty training. He whines at the door he has never pottied in his crate. The only issue we have is that when we are in the basement he pees and poops on the floor. It's been about a week since he last had an accident upstairs but every time we go downstairs to the basement he goes. I can't figure this one out. The floor is carpet and tile and of course he goes on the carpet. Any suggestions.

On an unrelated topic... Do all Shelties attack the vacuum? Disney is my third Sheltie and from the first week we had him he attacks the vacuum just like the other two.

With mine it's the swiffer. Whenever I want to rile him up I get it out and take a few turns around the kitchen floor.

I believe the thing about the basement is that he's not considering it as part of the living space that he's got to keep clean. Maybe if you let him spend some time down there he'll come to look upon it that way?
 
One of the best things about this forum is the "thank God I'm not alone" factor. My 15 week old has been driving me crazy doing the same kind of thing. Never messes his crate, always uses the doggie door to go out when the baby gate is up keeping him in the kitchen and den. But the second I took the baby gate down and turned my back he pottied in the foyer or in the living room! So I'm trying just giving him the living room and watching him like a hawk when he's in there, hoping he doesn't consider it part of the house as opposed to being ornery. I am on day three of no accidents in there.

Vacuum cleaner is for barking and running away! Great game! Broom is for attacking and hanging on while I try to sweep :lol:
 
the only thing i could think of is maybe he just doesn't know how to tell you down there he needs to go. That was our issue for a while that ruutu literally didn't know how to tell us he needed to go. Since then, no accidents. Another thing it could be is he's just having too much fun to stop! or you aren't picking up on his tiny signals. and vacuums are theeeee enemy to shelties. Except my pup. he's afraid of it hardcore. :yes:
 
The minute I touch the sweeper....mine start. When the weather is nice I tend to put them outside so I can sweep with having them in the way barking. Neither if my Shelties are babies but I have kept the baby gates and they do come in handy when using the sweeper...I am able keep them combined....which makes the job go so much faster.

Maybe you could try cleaning the carpet very well to eliminate the poo smell, and put his crate in the area that he usually 'goes' in. Because he doesn't 'go' in his crate it may deter him from pooing/peeing were it's at. I agree, he needs to spend more time down there to let him know that that is part of the house. Also when cleaning the carpet I spray vinegar on it:ick. It smells, yes, but your pup will be less likely to relieve there. The vinegar works for some dog but not all. You can also spray it on furnetur that they like to chew on:yes:. It tastes BAD!

Codie, our previous Sheltie, never really paid much attention to the vac or sweeper.

Oliver, our 9 week old Sheltie, LOVES the swifter. Goes nuts after it. He's not to sure about the vac yet though.
