I know that the pups are not to be in any classess or go to dog parks until they have completed their puppy shots. My question is how long does it take for them to get the whole series nd are they able to go places where there are no other dogs that do not have all their shots? What about places where there are no dogs at all??? I guess what I am trying to ask is, do the pups have to stay in the house and in their humans yard only til the shots are all completed?? I am going to get my Dutchess at tax time and I just can't wait to show her off to others but, I don't want to put her in any danger of contracting any problems. Anyone have any suggestions???

My puppies were in controlled environments starting at 6 weeks. Controlled to me means that only with and around dogs that I know have not received a live vaccine within 60 days. They went to my mothers house to play with her dogs, to my non-doggie bosses house, to my breeder friend who has nothing but geriatric dogs who are no longer vaccinated. They don't go to dog schools, pet stores, showsites or any other super-germy place. They don't hit the floor at the vets office, that's a super ick. There was a puppy at the vet with kennel cough, and if it hadn't have been 100 degrees out, I would have waited outside. Ick.

Where are all the forum people when I am at the vet's office? Why can't there be people like this at my vet's?! Everybody would stay the triggerfish away from each other, and all of our dogs would be on leashes.

we don't live near you so we don't show up in your vet's waiting room
I have waited outside plenty of times until I was sure it was close to our turn or that all the others were out of the waiting room.
Cranpup went everywhere in a cute carrying bag when he was a wee lad- after he'd had his shots, he was getting a little big to carry around and then he finally got to walk around on the ground

So, how long would it be before she would be able to be with other pups and her puppy vacinations are done??? It has been a long time since I had a pup and the last one I had was 6 months old when I got him. Thanks for all the input.

we went to Petsmart for puppy classes- they have to be at least 10 weeks old before they can attend. so Cran was a little older than that - had at least one set of shots before the first class- might have had the second too- can't remember and that was just in Feb. seems so long ago now

I do Rachels method of control settings for my puppies. 5-6 weeks outside here, than to peoples houses who either dont have dogs or have older dogs that are well vaccinated. At the vets they wait in the car..no matter the weather. My vet is wonderful however his clientele leaves something to be desired some days:rolleyes2:

Its fine to socialize your puppy with different situations and people, just use common sense. Dont bring them to the dog park, around other young puppies, pet stores..etc. Bring them into work if you can for a people meet and greet relatives houses as long as they dont have new puppies as well. etc..I used to sneak mine into work when I worked for a bunch of surgeons....:lol:hheheeeee they never knew half the time or I would bring them in when I knew what doctors were there that were animal lovers!

Thank you so much for the info! It gives me some insight to what and how I need to do once I get her. When are the puppy shots complete??? Is there like 3 series of shots or 4??

When Cadbury had his injections the first was at 8 weeks, the second at 10 weeks and the vet said give it a week before he mingles freely with other dogs. However, I did start puppy party at 10 weeks because that was at the vets and the pups were all vaccinated. (Bear in mind I am in the UK, so US vets may have different timings).

Before injections are complete I take the pup everywhere being carried to see things and meet people, also I introduce to dogs I know are vaccinated and friendly - I don't take the pup to the park and let it run around until the vaccs are all done, because even if there are no dogs, germs can live in dog poo.

The vital socialisation period is 8 - 16 weeks, so its important to fit as many different experiences in during that time as possible.

Fortunately now I belong to my training club I will take sheltie pup with me there when Cadbury does his training, as I know which dogs to introduce the pup to, also it will give the pup practice travelling in the car.

Per our vet's schedule, we start the first shots to puppies here at 6 weeks old, then every 3 weeks following that...so at 9, 12, and 15. They usually do the rabies the week after the last puppy booster shot, so rabies at 16 weeks and they are all done for the year at that point.
