Hi, this is my first post on this website. Our Sheltie puppy, Riley, is 10 months old today and we love him dearly. As I am now retired, I kept a growth chart for him which is something I never did with our previous dogs. In looking at his chart, Riley has not gotten any taller since he was 5 months old. At that time he was growing so fast I really thought he would be over-sized. He has now been the same weight for the last 3 months. Is this OK? Do some dogs just quit growing at a young age? He seems healthy in every other way and is presently going through that awkward stage of losing his puppy fluff and getting his adult hair. He always has food & water available and is allowed free-feeding all day. Thanks in advance for any input.

Have you contacted the breeder or vet yet? My Liam kept growing so big he looks like a small collie! Maybe Riley’s parents are smaller? What is his current weight and height?

We have not been to the vet since his last shots and chip implant. Covid is running rampant in our county right now and I don't want to risk it. His checkup was great at that time. His mom was on the small side but not toy or anything. The breeder thought he would end up around 22 lbs because he was the biggest of his litter. Right now he is 15 inches and 16.2 lbs. As I mentioned, he seems totally healthy just not growing anymore and I was wondering about it. (He has been this height since he was 5 months.) I am still trying to figure out how to add a picture.

that is right in size so I'd go with nothing to worry about. some lines grow fast and reach their maximum height before turning a year and some lines grow slower and don't get there until a year. it will be the same with fur- some grow it faster than others.

As others have said I wouldn't worry either. My first boy Piper (5) was about 9 1/2" at 10 weeks and he probably stopped growing early too (he was my first so I didn't realize how small he was) and ended up at 13 1/2" tall. My youngest is now 2 and he grew fast and kept on growing until at least a year and is now over 17".
15" is a good height and in the standard. Also they can continue to grow even after a year, albeit slowly.

What a beautiful face! 15" and 16 lbs sounds perfect to me--thats what Benson was at 11 months...

He looks like a little lion! Very cute. My Meadow is now 5 months old and has been growing at the rate of about 1 inch per month. She is at 14 inches and I'm really hoping for at least 15", 16 would be great. I think each line of dogs does grow at different rates, as Calliesmom said.

They have an upwards growth spurt and then they get a lengthwise growth spurt. So he was still growing, just growing from a squat little puppy body to a long adult body.
This is my puppy (at 4 1/2mths) next to my 13 yr old. See she has some butt growing to do. We're off for a walk soon so I'll take another photo to show you how long she's grown in that time
