Puppy Teeth Question almost 6 months

I just have a question. My sheltie Presley is going to be 6 months at the end of this month. I've noticed that not all of his baby teeth are gone. His Adult teeth do seem to be coming in. Some of the baby teeth are loose. He is getting fixed next week So I'll have the vet check. But Should I be worried?
Thanks, Heather

If the adults are coming in and the babies are loose they will most likely fall out on their own soon. We do see retained teeth usually the canine teeth(fangs) but they are really firm in the mouth. If the adults are more than half way in and the babies are still firm or if it looks like the adults are being pushed out of place at all, they should be removed so they don't mess up the bite. Your vet should be able to determine if that needs to happen or not when he is under for his neuter. If his neuter is next week don't worry to much.:smile2:

Riley is having the same thing happening right now too. He only has his top two canines left for the baby teeth, but his adult teeth have just started coming in right behind them. I was worrying about it, although I just felt them and one of them is becoming nice and loose now. I figured that the adult teeth might just help to push out the final baby ones left.

Riley also heads in for his neuter next Friday also (how time flies for the little ones)

Juliet is almost 8 months old and her baby fangs are still firmly in place right behind the adult ones. All others have fallen off and been replaced. She really doesn't need 4 fangs!!

I went to the vet and he said he would recommend pulling it out but won't put a pup under anaesthetic just to do it. Juliet has already been spayed so I'm not sure when else we can do this. He did say to ensure that food doesn't get stuck there in the meantime.

If she ever needs a dental cleaning you can do it then.

However, I have anesthezied them for just this as food and debris(hair etc) gets stuck in there very easily and tartar buildups up alot between the tooth. Next thing you know you have a pocket behind the adult tooth and possible problems with the adult tooth down the line. The root is usually really long on these teeth almost as long or longer then the tooth above the gum because the root doesn't reabsorb as it should so the baby tooth can't fall out.

Now you've got me all worried! Her teeth are sparkley white from all the raw meaty bones! Not sure when I will have to take her in for a dental.

I wouldn't want to wait so long that there will be a huge problem. But at the same time, I'm deathly afraid of putting any of my dogs under anaesthetic! :( When do you think is a good time for her to get it done?

That is a problem with the raw meaty bones keeping the teeth so clean. JUstice needed a dental cleaning when I started him on raw and within 2 weeks all the tartar was gone.

As long as you are not seeing an debris or tartar building up you should be fine to wait. You could try flossing between the teeth to keep the buildup down to a minimum. Otherwise if you are seeing any debris building up or redness in the gums between the teeth , I would get them out. You maybe able to manage the teeth better than most owners.

Hmm. The gumline looks abit red. She was outside chewing on a palm leaf last night and had a looong piece of a leaf stuck in between her fangs.

Last night I asked her breeder for her thoughts on the fangs and she said if she still had Juliet they would be out by now!! Oops. Juliet's sister from the same litter (who is also spayed, if it makes a difference) had hers fall out not long ago. So, *take a DEEP breath* I have made the decision to get them removed next week. I have insisted that the most experienced vet does it (even tho' he doesn't do routine surgery) because I need peace of mind. I'm sure anaesthetic risks are low right??? Eeps!

Thanks for the advice on teeth

Thank you everyone for replying. I'm not to worried about it. I called the vet and told them if they needed to do anything do it while he is under. Presley has dm he does not need added surgeries. That's the reason I got him because no one else wanted him. He is a very sweet little boy. Just has some hairloss so far on the face. Very loving dog. I have 2 other shelties both males...Luka and Seth are their names. -H:winkgrin:
