Puppy Time!?

But, just so I am clear, I need to wait until her 6 months vaccinations before I introduce her to other dogs (like at the dog park or in puppy classes)?

I think parvo and rabies are the most important ones. Those diseases can be deadly to puppies. Parvo vaccines usually start before 8 weeks and the shots continue to boost immunity once a month until 4 months. For us rabies was also at 4 months. But some vets do space them out a little bit more, and some dogs are more sensitive to vaccines than others.

My understanding is that it's OK as long as you know the other dog is vaccinated. Especially if your dog has already started to receive some parvo boosters. But no dog park till 4 months or until parvo and rabies is done.

My breeder said not to Rabies until 20 weeks, that if we did it sooner it would terminate the health agreement, however my vet insists on Rabies at 12 weeks!!! Not sure what to do.

Kai'a says "yip, yip, snarfull snort, ruff" - Which translated means "Thank you, your pup is a cutie too". :smile2:

That puts you in a tough position. I'm not sure what the rabies vaccine has to do with a health agreement. Doesn't make sense to me. I think I would wait till 20 weeks. Bailey got hers at 16 weeks.

Did Bailey have any effects from it? I don't think my vet will force me to get it at 12 weeks, but he lobbied pretty hard for me to do it next week when we come in from round 2 of vac's. I am leaning towards waiting until 20 weeks to. :confused2:
 
alot of breeders want to hold on the rabies until 20 weeks, heck some I know wait till they are 6 months or more. The reasoning is because they feel too many vaccines at once is taxing on their immune system and can cause problems with them. I personally space out vaccines. Even if it means me making multiple trips up to the vets, id rather be safe than sorry. I think once you see an animal with a vaccine problem it changes how you do it.

And as far as your vet insisting/forcing what you give YOUR animals is totally wrong in the end the decision is up to the pet owner! If it were myself i'd be looking for a new vet...

What is the law for your city/state. The vaccines are label for puppies over 3 months. But the law dictates when they must be given by. In minnesota,it is open 3-6 months based on manufactor's recommendations. But must be done by 6 months. I give mine around 5 months when I finish with the other puppy vaccines. I don't like giving more than 1 vaccine at a time.

Ok I looked up the rabies law for your state. This is why your vet is insisting on 3 months. It the law. :( So don't be hard on your vet. They can't make recommendations against state law or they would be in big trouble.

I'm not sure about the law here, but Fluffy is scheduled to get her rabies shot in about two weeks (which would put her a little past 16 weeks).

Be wary of some vets though. The old vet told me I couldn't give Smudge heartworm medicine until he was older. He wasn't able to get heartworm medicine from the vet until he was 16 weeks. I got Fluffy at about 10 weeks, and she was put on Advantage Multi, which covers heartworm. So that means Smudge could have been given something for heartworm all along. :mad:

Advantage Multi is the medicine I'm always talking about that is used overseas for demodex mite treatment.

When in doubt - google it! Or switch vets. Maybe both. I'm glad I switched for sure!

Yes he could've been on heartworm before 16 weeks. I think most heartworm medicines are 8 weeks and older. Bailey started hers at 10 weeks old.
